Love it or hate it, airline food has long been a hot topic among the travel community.

While you're unlikely to receive a five-star meal on a plane, many airlines pride themselves on their in-flight menu.

Among these airlines is Air France, which offers complimentary meals on both long-haul and short-haul flights.

But according to one Reddit user, their meal was far from gourmet. 

Alongside a picture of what appears to be two slices of cheese on buttered bread, the user wrote: 'It’s giving Fyre Festival vibes.'

The user is referring to an image that went viral in 2017 of a cheese sandwich served in a Styrofoam container from Fyre Festival. 

The sandwich at the festival was meant for staff, but it became the public face of the festival's overall failure to deliver on its luxury promises.

'Guess it’s worth paying a few extra bucks for Delta metal next time!' the Redditor added, referring to their own in-flight meal.

The user said they were travelling from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, which has a flight time of around seven hours.

According to the Air France website, on long-haul economy flights, travellers are provided with an appetiser, a starter, a choice of two hot dishes, bread and cheese, as well as a dessert. 

In the Reddit thread, one user wrote: 'This feels like a Mississippi prison lunch.'

'I love Air France but this is so embarrassing,' wrote another.

Another comment read: 'It’s exactly the same in their Premium Economy cabin too. But to be fair, a French breakfast is usually just a coffee and four cigarettes.'

However, some commenters stood up for the airline's food offering.

'I know this is unpopular, but that looks delicious to me,' wrote one user. 'A cheese sandwich is a common snack choice in Europe. Get used to it,' wrote another.

One comment called out the Reddit poster for being misleading.  

'I take this route on Air France regularly, and this is the snack pre-landing that you get before arrival,' they wrote.

'You have a full meal five hours earlier, and you generally get a cheese sandwich with mustard, a lemon cake and a yoghurt. 

'It's a good snack, a "gouter" as you call it in French. For a second lighter meal, I find it sufficient.'

The Daily Mail has approached Air France for comment.
