An iconic BBC quiz show has been renewed for its fourth revival series and its popular comedian host will once again return.

The Weakest Link began in 2000 and ran for thirteen series until its cancellation, over a thousand episodes later, in 2010.

A Children In Need special episode aired in 2017 and the show was revived with a full series in 2021, followed by another special in 2022.

The programme was hosted by controversial host Anne Robinson throughout its original run, and its 2017 revival special, and Romesh Ranganathan thereafter.

News of its return comes just days before the current series is due to end, having begun in November 2023.

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan, 45, has revealed his return as host of The Weakest Link for a fourth series

Romesh has hosted the quiz show since its 2017 special episode and the upcoming series is the programme's seventeeth overall

Controversial host Anne Robinson - known for her sharp tongue - hosted the programme from its inception in 2000 to 2012 when she and the original run retired after thirteen series and over a thousand episodes

Since the revival, each series has featured only celebrity contestants, and series 17 is no different.

The upcoming series will be Romesh's fourth, and he is looking forward to returning.

Romesh shared: 'It’s really a delight to be part of the BBC One Saturday night experience. I once again look forward to taking the credit if it goes well and blaming the format if it doesn’t.'

Series 17 will feature a number of special themed episodes including Strictly Come Dancing, comedians, Gladiators, and duos, with more to be announced.

Pete Ogden, Executive Producer BBC Studios Entertainment Productions said: 'We’re so excited to be back with another series of The Weakest Link to entertain the nation with on a Saturday night.

'With the amazing Romesh back at the helm, we know there will be lots of laughs. We have some fantastic special episodes lined up for this series and can’t wait to put our stellar line up of celebrity contestants to the test, for excellent causes.'

The Weakest Link sees contestants work as a team to build a cash prize by correctly answering general knowledge questions.

Each round they vote for who they think is the poorest performing contestant, or the weakest link.

The current series has had some hilarious moments, including Helen Flanagan believing that the White Cliffs Of Dover were edible and in fact made out of cheese

The statistic weakest link is then revealed to the audience, as well as the strongest, and they often are not who has been voted off.

The last two contestants go head-to-head for the prize money and the highly coveted title of Strongest Link.

The current series has had some hilarious moments, including Helen Flanagan answering that the White Cliffs Of Dover were made of cheese.

Series four begins filming in Glasgow this Spring and details of the celebrity contestants will be revealed in the upcoming months.

Series three of The Weakest Link ends on March 30 and series four will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in the year.
