Culture heavyweight Professor Donna Hope has thrown her support behind Mr Vegas’ national honour, declaring the dancehall veteran’s Order of Distinction (OD) “well-deserved”.
The veteran singjay, who burst onto Jamaica’s music scene in the late 1990s, rose to prominence with hits including Nike Air before cementing his place in dancehall with the 1998 smash Heads High.
Now, almost three decades after making his breakthrough, the artiste, whose given name is Clifford Smith, is set to receive one of Jamaica’s national honours in October.
Mr Vegas was among the 140 persons named on Independence Day to receive a national award on Heroes Day.
The OD, which ranks sixth in the order of precedence among Jamaica’s Orders of Societies of Honour, carries the motto ‘Distinction Through Service’ and recognises individuals for tangible contributions to the nation.
Reacting to the selection of Mr Vegas, Hope, researcher and professor of Culture, Gender and Society at The University of the West Indies, said the award is “well-deserved”.
“He has been a renowned dancehall artiste for almost 30 years, especially since his first big hit, Heads High, in 1998,” Hope said.
She said since breaking onto the scene, the artiste, whose given name is Clifford Smith, has continued to build and maintain his place in the dancehall industry. Hope said it is unfortunate that a lot of the younger persons tend to judge artistes such as Mr Vegas based on the content they post on social media platforms such as TikTok. 
“This man has had a very extensive career in dancehall, and I find that some people want to dismiss his accolades, but Vegas has been a well-renowned artiste and has done his time,” Hope said.
“If he gets an award at that level, it is well-deserved,” she added.
When he is invested with the OD, the Sweet Jamaica artiste will join a select group of dancehall artistes who have been recognised with the national honour. The list includes Sean Paul, Shaggy, Admiral Bailey, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Wayne Marshall, Agent Sasco and Yellowman.
In lauding the efforts of  Mr Vegas and others who continue to wave Jamaica’s musical flag high at the four corners of the world, Hope said that another dancehall act being recognised represents another win for the culture. 
“It’s really great to see dancehall continue to get recognised at this level with Mr Vegas getting an OD in this current set of national honours,” she said.
For Hope, Vegas’ recognition also reflects a broader shift in how dancehall and its pioneers are being valued, particularly for their role in shaping Jamaica’s cultural identity.
“I’m just very pleased to see the industry that dancehall is coming to the forefront and getting the recognition for the value that it has added to who we are as a people in helping us to value ourselves, and value the lives of the ordinary people who are important to the bedrock of this society,” Hope said.
