Final Fantasy 7 is the game that never seems to end. That's not just because the original PS1 release is filled with things to do, it's because of the subsequent follow-ups that came as part of the Final Fantasy 7 Compilation. It's also because of the whole remake thing that Square Enix has been doing over the past few years, with the third part, Revelation, due out next year. And as hard as it might be to believe, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi, this really will be the end. For the remake trilogy, at least. More or less.

Hamaguchi recently spoke with Automaton (ta for the spot, GamesRadar) where he was notably asked about the potential for DLC with this release. "I feel that, at this point, both the media and the fan community are expecting a DLC to come," Hamaguchi said. "Plus, I sense immense expectations for the FF7 franchise, or rather, it feels like fans don’t want it to end yet. That being said, things haven’t crystallized yet, so we can’t certainly say 'Okay, we’re going to make DLC for FF7 Revelation.' However, if we get the support from fans, and if there’s genuine demand for it, I think we’d want to consider it."

That, of course, would push the actual end of Final Fantasy 7 abstractly into the future, but Hamaguchi did want to make one thing clear about the main game: "The story will be concluded within the main game. We’re serious about concluding the series with FF7 Revelation, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind." As he explains it, if any DLC does materialise, it would be "a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories, kind of like what we did with Yuffie with FF7R Episode Intermission."

Hamaguchi was also asked about Ever Crisis shutting down, and his thoughts on Revelation truly being the end of Final Fantasy 7. "Once the game is out, we’ll be observing everyone’s reactions and reviews. So, if there is a significant demand, and if we, as creators, are able to come up with a fresh and compelling answer to that, we might consider doing something else down the line," he explains. I sure hope they don't! He does, at least, note that "thinking too far ahead is definitely not a good thing for FFV7 Revelation, so we’re solely focused on finishing up its development for the time being."

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is due out spring 2027.
