For those of you with visible Carbon Fiber wheels on your C8 Corvettes, are you happy with the decision to put them on your car? Brooks from the YouTube channel DragTimes recently shared a video that detailed his experience in dealing with a broken carbon fiber wheel for his C8 Corvette Z06, and now that has him questioning whether or not to put them on his upcoming ZR1X order.

The drag racer explained that his C8 Corvette Z06 now stays up at his mountain cabin, which is about an hour from Knoxville. Late one night while driving home from dinner, Brooks says he hit something on the dark mountain road and heard a loud “bang,” but everything seemed okay and he still managed to make it home safely. The next morning when checking on the car, he found that the tire had gone flat. The culprit was a crack in one of his carbon fiber wheels.

He found an unnamed company out in California who repairs damaged visible carbon fiber wheels and he decided to go that route. He says the total cost of the repair and shipping the wheel was approximately $1,800 which included $200 to ship it there, $1300 for the repair, and then another $100 to send it back. He also had the cost of driving one hour into Knoxville to a tire shop with touchless tire machine as well as the cost to mount and balance the wheel.

One viewer commented that “he would have absolutely bought a new wheel,” adding “I wouldn’t trust that wheel anymore.” But Brooks says that the company that did the repairs uses x-rays to ensure the wheel was structurally sound. The repaired area showed a slight weave change inside the wheel, but it was smooth and symmetrical. After the tire was mounted on the repaired rim, it was checked for leaks using soap and water. Brooks has also been keeping a watchful eye on his tire pressure monitor as well.

The whole experience has left him wondering if he should spend the $16,000 to equip his ZR1X in Carbon Revolution’s OEM wheels, or should he go with an aftermarket magnesium wheel which he says weigh about the same as the composite wheels. He believes the magnesium wheels may be better choice for drag racing and everyday use. Brooks reached out fellow YouTuber Shmee who is also getting a ZR1X. When he asked Shmee if he’s going with the CF wheels on his ZR1X, he responded absolutely not after dealing with three cracked carbon fiber wheels on his Mustang GT500.

Brooks never really stated which way he would be going with the wheels for his ZR1X, but you can see this experience has definitely given him something to think about. Some in the comments have suggested using the carbon wheels for only at the racetrack or drag strip and then use standard wheels for the everyday driving.
