The Oceans Just Broke a Heat Record and El Niño Could Push Them Even Higher

The oceans just crossed a line scientists had expected from scientific models, but still dreaded seeing happen.

On June 21, 2026, global sea surface temperatures outside the polar regions rose to record levels for this time of the year, according to two European climate-monitoring services. The margin was small, but the overall trendline was not. Warmer oceans can energize storms, raise sea levels, melt ice and strain marine life from coral reefs to fisheries.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service measured the daily global sea surface temperature at 20.86° Celsius (69.55° Fahrenheit) on June 21. That edged past the previous high of 20.83° Celsius, set in 2023 and 2024.

The Copernicus Marine Service, using a separate system, reached the same conclusion. Its data showed sea surface temperatures hitting 21.0° Celsius (69.8° Fahrenheit), also beating the 2023 and 2024 marks.

For a global ocean average, even a tiny rise can be impactful. The number draws from huge stretches of water, so a few hundredths of a degree can point to heat building across many regions at once, rather than a single extreme patch skewing the result. Because warming affects the oceans unevenly, some parts of the oceans can heat much more than the reported average.

Copernicus and other reports described unusually warm waters in the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, parts of the Pacific, and waters near northern Canada. At the end of June, European seas showed sharp temperature spikes, with the western Mediterranean about 6° Celsius above the long-term average in some areas.

The two Copernicus services use different methods. One reconstructs global conditions by combining observations with weather models. The other focuses more directly on ocean measurements and forecasts. Their agreement strengthened the finding.

“Current conditions could indicate the beginning of a new phase, leading, once more, to uncharted territory,” Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a Copernicus statement.

The timing is especially concern. NOAA declared El Niño conditions on June 11, saying they were expected to strengthen into the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026-27. NOAA also reported a 63% chance that the event would become very strong between November and January, a level that would rank among the largest El Niño events in records going back to 1950.

El Niño is the warm phase of a natural Pacific climate cycle. During it, warm water spreads across the central and eastern tropical Pacific, shifting winds and rainfall patterns around the world.

But this El Niño is forming in a changed ocean. NASA says the ocean has absorbed about 90% of the excess heat from planetary warming over the past century. That stored heat raises the baseline on which natural cycles now operate.

“With ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months,” Buontempo added.

When the sea heats up, the damage moves through the water and onto land. Corals can lose the algae that keep them alive, fish may leave their usual grounds in search of cooler water, and coastal communities can face heavier rain as warm seas add moisture to the air. The same heat also helps storms draw more devastating energy and, over time, contributes to rising seas and melting ice.

Marine heat waves pose a particular threat. These are stretches of unusually hot ocean water that can last months. They can damage kelp forests, harm shellfish, disrupt fisheries and change where species can survive.

Scientists still need time to determine whether the June spike marks a temporary surge or a longer shift. El Niño can push temperatures upward for months, and sea surface temperatures often peak later in the Northern Hemisphere summer.

But the broader trend leaves little comfort. The oceans have spent decades absorbing heat from a warming atmosphere. Now, as El Niño releases more warmth back into the air, the old temperature records may no longer be hard to break.
