Submarine Recycling ProgramBy tallturtle82(2026-04-01)The Ship-Submarine Recycling Program occurs at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, west of Seattle. The process involves removing all equipment etc., defueling and decommissioning.
The nuclear fuel is removed and sent by rail to the Naval Reactor Facility in the Idaho National Laboratory. The nuclear reactors are sealed and sent to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southern Washington.
Once the fuel is removed the sub or ship is decommissioned. The vessel goes from "USS Name" to "ex-Name".
