Bill Gates is worth around $105 billion today, but his fortune would be dramatically larger if he had never donated tens of billions of dollars to charity. And had he also held on to most of his original Microsoft stake, he could be worth more than $1 trillion.
Read more: How Rich Would Bill Gates Be Today If He Never Donated A Dollar To Charity?
For the better part of two decades, Bill Gates was the undisputed king of the billionaire rankings. From the mid-1990s through the late 2010s, he occupied the top spot so consistently that the title "world's richest person" practically became part of his name.
Today, Bill Gates has a net worth of $105 billion. Obviously, that is still an incomprehensible fortune. But it places him well behind a growing collection of tech founders who retained larger stakes in the companies they created.
There are two major reasons Bill Gates is not much richer today.
First, he has spent more than three decades giving away an extraordinary amount of money.
Second, he sold the overwhelming majority of his Microsoft shares.
Those decisions are related, but they are not the same. And when you separate them, you arrive at two very different answers to the question:
How rich would Bill Gates be today if he never donated a dollar to charity?
The best answer is approximately…
$460 billionBut that number comes with an absolutely enormous caveat. Had Gates also refused to sell most of his Microsoft shares, his fortune could be somewhere between $1.27 trillion and $1.63 trillion.
Let's walk through both scenarios.

Bill Gates says he has personally donated $59.5 billion to the Gates Foundation. The foundation reports that Bill and his former wife, Melinda French Gates, contributed a combined $63.9 billion through the end of 2025.
Therefore, you might assume that the answer to our question is simple:
$105 billion current net worth + roughly $60 billion donated = $165 billion
That calculation dramatically understates the true number.
Gates did not place $60 billion in cash under a mattress and then hand over the mattress. Much of his philanthropy was funded with highly valuable stocks, particularly Microsoft shares, that continued appreciating after he donated them.
When Gates transferred those shares, he did not merely surrender their value on the day of the donation. He also surrendered every dollar of future appreciation and every future dividend those shares would generate.
A recent reconstruction of Gates' charitable gifts calculated that the assets he and Melinda gave away would have added approximately $356 billion to his fortune had they remained under his control. The analysis placed his philanthropy-adjusted fortune at $464 billion when his actual net worth was approximately $108 billion.
Using our current $105 billion estimate produces essentially the same result:
$105 billion + $356 billion = $461 billionSo, had Bill Gates never donated a dollar but otherwise followed roughly the same investment and diversification strategy, he would have a net worth of approximately $460 billion today.
That would likely make him the second-richest person in the world, behind only Elon Musk.
How $60 Billion Turned Into $356 BillionA single donation from 2017 illustrates the power of this lost appreciation.
In 2017, Gates donated 64 million Microsoft shares worth approximately $4.6 billion at the time. It was his largest charitable gift in nearly two decades.
Microsoft shares today trade at around $488. At that price, those same 64 million shares would be worth more than:
$31 billionAnd that does not include nearly a decade of dividends.
In other words, one $4.6 billion donation ultimately removed more than $31 billion from Gates' potential net worth. His much earlier Microsoft stock donations had even more time to appreciate.
This is why simply adding the original dollar value of Gates' donations back to his fortune does not work. You have to ask what he would have done with those assets had he kept them. In many cases, the answer is that he would have continued owning stocks that multiplied in value.
The Gates Foundation itself demonstrates how donated money can grow while simultaneously being spent. By the end of 2025, the foundation had an $89 billion endowment despite having distributed more than $110 billion since its inception. Those figures also include enormous donations from Warren Buffett, who contributed $47.9 billion through 2025, so the entire endowment cannot simply be attributed to Gates.
Giving Away Nearly EverythingBill Gates' philanthropy began in earnest during the 1990s, when his rapidly appreciating Microsoft stake was turning him into the richest person on Earth.
He and Melinda formally established the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, combining several earlier family charities. The foundation concentrated on global health, disease prevention, poverty, education, and access to technology.
Gates later joined Warren Buffett and Melinda in creating the Giving Pledge, an initiative encouraging billionaires to donate the majority of their fortunes.
In 2025, Gates went significantly further. He announced that he intends to donate virtually all of his remaining wealth and permanently close the Gates Foundation at the end of 2045. Between its existing endowment and Gates' future contributions, he expects the organization to spend more than $200 billion over its final 20 years.
Therefore, the gap between Gates' actual net worth and his hypothetical no-charity net worth will probably become much larger over time.
But even $460 billion is not the most extreme version of this alternate history.
The Much Bigger Microsoft CaveatMicrosoft went public on March 13, 1986. On the day of the IPO, Bill Gates owned approximately 45% of the company.
Microsoft ended its first trading day with a market capitalization of $780 million, making Gates' stake worth approximately $350 million. Within a year, he was a billionaire.
Over the following decades, Gates steadily sold or donated his Microsoft shares. Some shares funded the Gates Foundation. Others were sold to diversify his fortune through Cascade Investment, the private investment firm that acquired stakes in public companies, private businesses, hotels, farmland, railroads, real estate, and other assets.
Diversification was perfectly rational. Had Microsoft collapsed, Gates would still have been enormously wealthy.
Microsoft did not collapse.
Today, Microsoft has a market capitalization of approximately $3.63 trillion.
If Gates had somehow maintained his original 45% stake, it would currently be worth:
$1.63 trillionThat scenario is admittedly extreme. Maintaining an exact 45% stake for 40 years would have required Gates to avoid selling shares for taxes, investments, philanthropy, personal spending, acquisitions, and diversification. His ownership also could have been diluted by employee stock compensation and corporate transactions.
So let's use a more conservative scenario.
Suppose Gates had sold a modest number of shares over the years but retained 35% of Microsoft. At Microsoft's current valuation, that stake would be worth:
$1.27 trillionMicrosoft currently pays an annualized dividend of $3.64 per share. A 35% stake would contain roughly 2.6 billion shares, generating approximately:
$9.5 billion per year in dividendsThat is nearly $800 million per month in dividend income, without selling a single share.
Two Different Alternate UniversesIt is important not to combine the two scenarios.
In the first alternate universe, Gates never gives money to charity but otherwise lives roughly the same financial life. He sells Microsoft shares, builds a diversified portfolio, pays taxes, goes through his divorce, and invests through Cascade.
In that universe, Bill Gates would be worth approximately:
$460 billionIn the second universe, Gates never gives money away and never sells the overwhelming majority of his Microsoft stake.
In that universe, his Microsoft shares alone could be worth between:
$1.27 trillion and $1.63 trillionHis 2021 divorce from Melinda would complicate that calculation because a portion of the fortune presumably would have been transferred to her. His enormous voting power also might have changed Microsoft's management, strategy, stock performance, and entire corporate history. Counterfactual fortunes are never as simple as multiplying one old ownership percentage by a current market capitalization.
But the overall conclusion is unavoidable.
Bill Gates did not fall down the billionaire rankings because Microsoft stopped creating wealth. He fell because he deliberately converted tens of billions of dollars of personal wealth into charitable assets and diversified away from what ultimately became one of the most valuable companies in human history.
Had he never donated a dollar, Bill Gates would probably be worth around $460 billion today.
Had he also held on to nearly all of his Microsoft shares, he would not merely be richer.
He could be a trillionaire.
