By our most recent calculations, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is now a billionaire. But acting salaries alone did not get him there. King Kahn's smartest move was a $75 million bet on a cricket team.

Who is the biggest movie star on Earth?
Most Americans would probably answer Tom Cruise. And it would be difficult to argue with them. Cruise has spent more than four decades starring in blockbuster movies, performing increasingly deranged stunts, and collecting some of the largest paychecks in Hollywood history. He is unquestionably one of the most famous human beings alive.
There is another actor with an equally convincing claim to the title. But amazingly, I bet this actor could walk down the street in most American cities without getting recognized. Meanwhile, in his home country, he can't walk down the street without an army of bodyguards and assistants to manage the ocean of fans.
We're talking about Shah Rukh Khan. Known to his fans as SRK or simply "King Khan."
Shah Rukh has appeared in more than 80 films and spent three decades as the dominant star of Indian cinema. His movies routinely attract enormous audiences across India, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the global Indian diaspora. In much of the world, his face is every bit as recognizable as Tom Cruise's, possibly more so.
And he is substantially richer. According to Celebrity Net Worth's current estimates, Tom Cruise's net worth is $600 million. Shah Rukh Khan beats that by $400 million because, according to our current calculations, Shah Rukh Khan just officially became a billionaire. If you remove Oprah (who isn't really an "actor") and Jami Gertz (whose $12 billion fortune comes thanks to her marriage to a private equity tycoon), you could argue that Shah Rukh Khan is now the richest actor in the world. And a big portion of his three-comma status comes thanks to… a cricket team.

Shah Rukh Khan did not inherit a film empire or come from one of Bollywood's powerful entertainment families. He began on Indian television in the late 1980s, moved to Mumbai, and made his film debut in 1992. Within a few years, performances in "Baazigar," "Darr," and "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" had transformed him into one of India's biggest stars.
Then came an extraordinary run of hits:
"Kuch Kuch Hota Hai." "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…" "Devdas." "Veer-Zaara." "Chak De! India." "My Name Is Khan." "Chennai Express." Decades later, "Pathaan" and "Jawan" proved that his drawing power had barely diminished.
The paychecks grew with the fame. During his most lucrative years, Shah Rukh earned tens of millions of dollars from acting fees, profit participation, endorsements, live performances, and private appearances.
More importantly, he moved beyond collecting salaries. In 2002, he and his wife, Gauri Khan, founded Red Chillies Entertainment. Shah Rukh was no longer merely the actor hired by the studio. He was becoming the studio owner.
When he stars in a Red Chillies production, he can participate in theatrical revenue, international distribution, television and streaming rights, music, visual effects, licensing, and the long-term value of the film. The company produced or co-produced movies including "Main Hoon Na," "Om Shanti Om," "Chennai Express," "Happy New Year," "Raees," "Zero," and "Jawan." It also built Red Chillies VFX into one of India's leading visual-effects businesses.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh became one of India's most sought-after celebrity endorsers. He promoted automobiles, watches, beverages, electronics, telecommunications companies, banks, real estate developers, and consumer brands.
By the middle of the 2000s, Shah Rukh was already fabulously wealthy. He owned a film company, a growing library of entertainment rights, a visual-effects studio, the palatial Mumbai residence Mannat, a luxury villa on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah, and other valuable assets.
Had he simply continued making movies, producing films, endorsing products, and buying trophy properties, he probably would have accumulated a fortune worth several hundred million dollars.
But in 2008, he took a portion of the wealth and influence created by his entertainment career and made a much bolder investment.
The $75 Million Cricket BetIn 2008, India's cricket governing body launched the Indian Premier League, or IPL, a new competition built around the fast-paced Twenty20 version of the sport.
The league borrowed heavily from American professional sports. Instead of traditional cricket clubs playing matches that could last several days, the IPL offered city-based franchises, player auctions, colorful uniforms, celebrity owners, enormous television ambitions, and games completed in roughly three hours.
No one knew whether it would succeed. Shah Rukh decided to make a very large bet that it would.
Through Red Chillies, Shah Rukh partnered with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband, businessman Jay Mehta, to acquire the league's Kolkata franchise for approximately $75 million.
They named the team the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Initially, the bet did not look particularly brilliant. KKR finished near the bottom of the standings in three of its first four seasons. The team cycled through coaches and captains and became known as much for its celebrity ownership as its performance.
Then its fortunes changed.
KKR won the IPL championship in 2012, again in 2014, and for a third time in 2024. Meanwhile, the IPL developed into one of the most valuable sports leagues on Earth, fueled by enormous television contracts, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and an intensely loyal fan base.
Billionaire StatusFor years, it was difficult to know exactly what KKR was worth. IPL teams were privately owned, controlling stakes rarely came up for sale, and the "brand values" published in annual studies were not the same as prices established in actual transactions.
That changed in 2026.
In March 2026, Royal Challengers Bengaluru was acquired in a deal valuing the franchise at approximately $1.78 billion. Two months later, in May 2026, Rajasthan Royals changed hands at a valuation of roughly $1.65 billion. Those sales provided the clearest evidence yet that the IPL's premier teams had become billion-dollar sports franchises.
Based on those recent transactions, we estimate that the standalone Kolkata Knight Riders franchise is worth approximately $1.6 billion to $1.75 billion. The broader Knight Riders organization, which also owns teams in the Caribbean, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, could be worth even more.
Red Chillies controls 55% of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise, with the Mehta Group owning the remaining 45%. At our estimated KKR valuation of $1.6 billion to $1.75 billion, the Red Chillies stake would be worth approximately $880 million to $960 million.
Shah Rukh personally owns half of Red Chillies. That would place the value of his indirect individual interest in KKR at approximately $440 million to $480 million, before assigning any additional value to the Knight Riders teams around the world. At either end of that range, when combined with his other assets and fortune, we can now comfortably declare that Shah Rukh Khan is a billionaire.
Richest Actor in the WorldAt a net worth of $1 billion, technically SRK ranks #3 on our list of the richest actors in the world. However, the #2 person on that list is Oprah ($5 billion), and she isn't primarily an actor if we're being nitpicky. Furthermore, the #1 richest actor in the world, Jami Gertz ($12 billion), is indeed mostly known for being an actress, but she owes her fortune to her private equity husband. So with those caveats removed, I don't think it would be controversial to say that Shah Rukh Khan is the richest actor in the world.
How The Rest Of The Fortune Adds UpShah Rukh has spent more than three decades receiving acting fees, shares of film profits, endorsement income, appearance fees, and live-performance revenue. In especially successful years, his combined income has reached tens of millions of dollars. Even after taxes and the expenses of maintaining a movie-star lifestyle, those earnings would have allowed him to accumulate an enormous portfolio of cash and investments.
His real estate adds tens of millions more. Mannat, his palatial sea-facing home in Mumbai, is estimated to be worth at least $25–$35 million. He also owns a luxury villa on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah and has been connected to properties in London, Delhi, and Alibaug.
Put it all together:
That is how we arrive at a current net worth estimate of $1 billion.
Acting Made Him Famous. Ownership Made Him A Billionaire. For an American comparison, imagine if Tom Cruise had used his "Top Gun" and "Mission: Impossible" earnings to build a film studio, acquire a major visual-effects company, and purchase a large stake in an NFL expansion team.
That is essentially what Shah Rukh Khan did.
Acting made him King Khan. Ownership made him a billionaire.
