Capcom has revealed that "approximately 90 percent of [its] unit sales are digital," in its latest quarterly earnings report, noting the Japanese publisher "does not anticipate a significant impact" on its operations as PlayStation gets ready to kill off physical media by 2028.

The comment comes from a question asked of the company in the Q&A portion of its latest financial report. One investor asked "what impact do you anticipate from the shrinking physical game market in the medium to long term?" and it seems Capcom is not too concerned about the shift to an all-digital future. The company is also likely buoyed by the fact Resident Evil Requiem has passed 8 million sales, and new IP Pragmata has sold through 2.5 million.

Capcom is the latest company to respond to Sony's controversial decision, following other publishers like Sega, which noted it believes "a digital shift is crucial" to the longevity of the games industry. The shift to digital is largely detrimental to the end user, however, as various analysts have proven games are almost always cheaper in physical stores. Combined with Sony's (possibly illegal) experimentation with dynamic pricing, you can see why there is plenty of resistance to the PlayStation move.

Capcom currently has a lot of good will with the gaming population at large: a solid run of interesting titles, a willingness to listen to player feedback, and a seemingly unbeatable formula when it comes to remakes has left the company in a very positive position over the past few years. With Onimusha: Way of the Sword still to come in 2026, it seems the threat of an all-digital future is doing little to dampen the publisher's outlook.

Speaking of Onimusha, Capcom recently moved the release date of the title up. Asked why in the financial report, the company responded: "We made a comprehensive decision based on development progress that made an earlier release possible, as well as the market environment." Capcom may not be intimidated by a discless future, but it seems the spectre of Grand Theft Auto 6 may have spooked the publisher, at the very least.
