If you’re a Formula 1 (F1) fan, you’ll know that Malaysia’s very own Sepang International Circuit was part of the renowned championship until its last Grand Prix in 2017. However, there are rumours that Sepang may be returning to the race calendar.

Earlier this week, rumours emerged that Malaysia could return to the F1 calendar later this year. According to reports, the Malaysian Grand Prix is in the mix as stand-in alternatives if the Middle Eastern races cannot proceed. Back in March, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) postponed the Qatar and Bahrain Grand Prix races due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, reducing the total number of Grand Prix races from 24 to 22.

However, due to the recent escalation in the conflict, there’s a high possibility that the Bahrain Grand Prix will be cancelled. Before the recent escalation, officials had hoped to slot Bahrain in for a race in the first weekend of October, between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grand Prix races. With the slot now empty, F1 officials are seeking potential locations to fill that gap.

According to reports, Sepang is one of the leading contenders for a last-minute alternative. Sources noted that the circuit may be capable of pulling off a quick turnaround event, since it’s right by an airport. Additionally, Malaysia is close to Singapore, where the next grand prix would take place. F1 is expected to make an early decision on this proposed October race in August when the championship enters its mid-season break.

While everything remains speculation, F1 fans have shared their reactions online, with many longtime enthusiasts excited for Sepang’s possible return. Before the circuit’s last grand prix, it had become a crowd favourite for being challenging and unpredictable, often producing gripping races. There have also been calls for Sepang’s return to the F1 calendar in recent years.

However, locals argue that Sepang is unlikely to return anytime soon, especially not at the last minute. Many cited cost issues, saying Malaysia may not have the financial capabilities to host a stand-in race. Despite being well-liked, Sepang pulled out of the F1 calendar because the local government couldn’t justify the huge race hosting fees demanded at the time. However, the circuit remains in regular use by the MotoGP and other international series.

For now, only time will tell whether Sepang will make a shock return to the F1 calendar. Meanwhile, the final two races of the year, Qatar on 29th November and Abu Dhabi on 6th December, are also facing uncertainties, putting Portugal’s Portimão circuit as a likely candidate for the season finale.
