9 August — The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This edition of the Bulletin contains a selection of articles on the struggle for the rights of indigenous peoples living in Russia:

  • Direct Damage. Olga Abramenko on the Russian state’s colonial rhetoriс
  • A video of the discussion in the European Parliament “Voices of Indigenous Peoples against Russia’s Repression” (with simultaneous interpretation into English). Representatives of indigenous movements were speaking about repressions and persecutions by Russian authorities, the speakers were human rights defender and Chair of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center (Kyiv) Eskender Bariev, the activist of Sámi Indigenous People and member of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) Valentina Sovkina and  journalist from Bashkortostan Ruslan Valiev.
  • A compilation of six human rights reports submitted by the ADC Memorial, in joint collaboration with the International Committee of Indigenous Peoples of Russia (ICIPR) and the Institut für Ökologie und Aktions-Ethnologie (INFOE) to UN bodies regarding violations of the rights of indigenous peoples in Russia. Following consideration of the reports, UN Special Rapporteur Mariana Katsarova highlighted the particular vulnerability of Russia’s indigenous peoples in her report on human rights violations in Russia, the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights issued recommendations on the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples in the Russian Federation, and the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples condemned the persecution of human rights defenders from indigenous communities.

  • The criminal prosecution of indigenous activists Daria Egereva and Natalia Leongardt, and the campaign in their support.
