Chinese memory chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, is reportedly closing in on mass-producing LPDDR6 memory chips. CXMT is a frequent feature of media coverage due to the ongoing shortage in the memory market, which, despite its limited global presence, has been speculated to disrupt the role of Samsung and SK hynix in the industry. The firm's IPO created fireworks as it became the latest in Asia and saw the shares surge by a whopping 466% to close at CNY49 after opening at CNY8.66 per share.
CXMT's LPDDR6 Memory Chips About To Complete R&D Verification, Says ReportToday's report comes a couple of days after another report claimed that Korean memory giant SK hynix was planning to commence mass production of LPDDR6 memory in the second half of 2026. LPDDR6 memory is expected to play a key role in the AI race and SK hynix had shared the details of its LPDDR6 memory modules in March this year.
The firm had revealed that the chips would be manufactured on the 10-nanometer class (1c) manufacturing process technology. It added that they would also feature a base operating speed in excess of 10.7 Gbps and feature 16Gb density. The manfuacturing process of these chips is typically geared towards meeting the needs of the low-power computing industry.
Now, a report from the Chinese media suggests that CXMT's DDR6 memory chips have completed the R&D verification stage to bring them one step closer to mass production.
According to the details, R&D verification follows single-chip verification and precedes small-batch import verification and mass production. If CXMT's LPDDR6 memory chips complete R&D verification, then they should enter small-batch import verification to fine-tune the production machinery for mass production.
The report also hints at the specifications of CXMT's LPDDR6 memory chips. It outlines that the first chips have a design speed of 12,800 Mbps (12.8 Gbps) and a base speed of 10,667 Mbps (10.7 Gbps). Additionally, the chips will have a capacity of 16Gb and a 1295 Ball POP package. The report, which comes courtesy of Pandaily, also claims that since Micron and Samsung are focused on HBM and server DRAM chips, CXMT is eager to seize an opening in the global memory market.
Apart from the competitive dynamics of the memory market, CXMT has also been in the news due to reports claiming that Apple is interested in sourcing memory chips from the firm. Multiple sources and publications have claimed that the Cupertino, California, consumer electronics giant is eager to procure memory from the Chinese company to ease supply chain pressure and use the products in gadgets sold in China and Asia.
