Following the immense fan backlash after Sony’s controversial move to end physical PlayStation disc production from 2028, the company seems to be doubling down on its decision, as PS5 consoles have been reportedly spotted with an advisory label on the box warning users of the discontinuation of game discs.

As reported by Push Square, users across social media have spotted these new stickers placed at the back of the PS5 box, with a message that reads, “Important notice: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PS Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” in multiple languages.

While these warning labels seem to be limited to just being placed on the current disc edition of the console, other social media posts, such as one from a user on Bluesky, showed that they received a similar message when trying to buy a disc drive for their PS5 online.

If the validity of these claims is true, it would be a clear sign that Sony has no intention of backing down from its decision, no matter the fan backlash. The company had even stated in a previous earnings call that it is “not seeing any impact” from the backlash, even with all the protests and talk of boycotts.

Meanwhile, Xbox is taking a different approach to the situation, opting to thread the line between physical and digital media by implementing a disc-to-digital strategy, one that will grant a digital license for a game when inserting its disc, although it remains to be seen if its upcoming console, Project Helix, will come with a disc drive, because looking that the way things are going, the PS6 will probably not.
