THE WORD “MATERIAL,” at least when it comes to the substance that makes up a stylish outfit, can represent all sorts of things. It might be nylon or silk or cotton or polyester or some combination of fabrics, metals, shiny bits, snazzy bobs, and various textiles. What is less commonly seen is a dress that is comprised of coffee filters, or citrus labels, or vinyl albums, or the sort of packaging you might remove from a product and never think about again. But wait: Several talented designers are, in fact, thinking about those frequently cast-off materials, and how they might be used in a glamorous get-up, the sort of pantsuit or frock an adventurous dresser might wear out on the town. You can find their whimsical and wonderful work at the Runway Fashion Show, a Festival of Arts favorite that sashays down the catwalk each August in Laguna Beach. The 2026 date is just ahead, on Aug. 9, and details on attending this one-of-a-kind, or certainly not-many-of-a-kind fashion extravaganza are live.
CLOTHING DONATIONS WELCOME: If you arrive with “gently used clothing” to donate, you’ll receive one free Festival of Arts admission (and the Runway Fashion Show is complimentary with your Festival of Arts entry). “This is one of our favorite traditions because it gives guests the opportunity to experience our artists’ creativity in an entirely new way,” said Christine Georgantas, Director of Exhibits and Events for the Festival of Arts. “For 16 years, our exhibiting artists have amazed audiences by transforming recycled materials into imaginative couture. We’re also proud that this event provides a meaningful way for our guests to support the important work of Working Wardrobes. By donating gently used clothing, attendees can enjoy the Festival while helping empower individuals on their journey to meaningful employment.” While the show is indeed free with your admission to the main fest, you can purchase a VIP seat for $35 if you’d like to be closer to the eye-catching action (Update: There will not be a VIP section in 2026). Everything begins at noon on Aug. 9, so do arrive early fashion fans and lovers of elegant upcycling.
