Did you experience an outage with Verizon? You aren’t the only one.
Fiber cuts related to vandalism disrupted service for Verizon users whose phones were stuck on SOS mode on Sunday, the company told its customers in a notice. Further details on the vandalism that led to the disruption were not disclosed.
“Acts of network theft and vandalism represent a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities,” the company said in its notice to customers. “Thank you for your patience as our teams work to protect and reinforce the network in your area.”
As a result, many Verizon customers in Southern California were not able to make calls or send texts until service was restored by 7:30 p.m., according to a Verizon spokesperson.
Some people told NBC Los Angeles that they had been dealing with interruptions since Sunday morning, while others said it had been an issue since Saturday.
“I got up this morning, and I said, ‘Is it the zombie apocalypse? Is everything gone now?'” said Natalie Lawless, who was impacted by the outage.
The company spokesperson said some customers had their service restored by 6 p.m., adding that “law enforcement is engaged” in the situation.
It’s unclear how many people in total were impacted by the outage, as well as when and where exactly the fiber cables were cut.
Comments on Downdetector, an online platform that tracks user reports about service issues, cited disruptions in Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Van Nuys and North Hollywood. Downdetector showed a spike at about 10:30 a.m. with more than 700 reports.
