Where should you invest Rs 10 lakh? Start with your financial goal

Before you invest Rs 10 lakh in lump sum, make sure you know your reasons for investing. Whether you are aiming to building an emergency fund, purchase a car, funding pay for your child's education, settle a loan or grow your wealth over time will influence how long you plan to invest and allocate your assets. Experts recommend prioritising liquidity for short-term objectives and choosing growth-oriented assets for building long-term wealth.

Before investing, understand your investment horizon, financial goals, asset allocation and the investment products available. Experts suggest conservative and liquid options for 1–3-year goals, while hybrid and equity investments become more suitable for horizons beyond five years. Depending on your goal, you may choose fixed deposits, liquid funds, bonds, hybrid funds or equity funds.

According to Rohan Goyal, Investment Research Analyst, MIRA Money, capital protection and liquidity should take priority over returns for a one-year investment. Such investments may be meant for emergency funds, vacations, near-term expenses, bonus parking or tax payments. He recommends fixed deposits, liquid or ultra-short debt funds and arbitrage funds, while advising investors to avoid equities.

Gurmeet Singh Chawla, Managing Director, Master Portfolio Services Ltd, adds that taxation should also influence the choice., FDs and debt funds may suit lower tax brackets, whereas arbitrage funds can be more tax-efficient for those in the higher tax brackets.

A three-year horizon can help achieve goals like buying a car, home renovation or building a contingency fund. Goyal recommends focusing on stability while Chawla suggests allocating 10–15% to equity through hybrid funds. His preferred mix includes short- or medium- duration debt funds for stability, balanced advantage funds for moderate growth and a small allocation to arbitrage funds for tax efficiency.

For medium-term goals such as a down payment for home, funding the initial stages of higher education or long-term wealth accumulation, Goyal recommends increasing equity exposure through aggressive hybrid funds, as market downturns can affect returns over five years.

Chawla suggests a 40:60 allocation between aggressive hybrid funds and pure equity funds (large-cap or index funds), along with annual portfolio rebalancing to maintain the desired asset allocation.

For long-term goals such as retirement planning, a child's higher education or wealth creation, Chawla recommends allocating 70% to equity and 30% to aggressive hybrid funds. He believes the hybrid allocation helps investors remain invested during market corrections and provides funds for rebalancing.

Goyal recommends 80–90% equity allocation, along with a glide path strategy, under which equity exposure is gradually reduced in the final 2–3 years before the goal to protect accumulated gains.

Match your investment to your time horizon

Experts agree that investing Rs 10 lakh should not be about choosing a single asset class. Instead, investors should first identify their financial goals, align them with the appropriate investment horizon, choose assets that suit that timeframe, and gradually shift from equity to conservative investments as the goal approaches. They also recommend considering the tax implications before redeeming investments.
