Mad Max 2 actor Kjell Nilsson, best known as Lord Humungus, has died at 76 after battling kidney disease.
Swedish-born actor and former bodybuilder Kjell Nilsson, best known for his unforgettable portrayal of the masked villain Lord Humungus in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, has died at the age of 76 following a prolonged battle with kidney disease.
Nilsson died peacefully on July 3, according to a statement released by his family.
The actor had been living with kidney disease for years and had endured a long health battle.
His death marks the loss of one of the most recognizable faces from George Miller's Mad Max franchise.
Nilsson's commanding performance as Lord Humungus helped turn Mad Max 2 into a global cult classic and established the character as one of cinema's most memorable action villains.
In a heartfelt statement shared after his death, Nilsson's family revealed that he had made the difficult decision to stop dialysis in the days before he passed away.
"This past Sunday, after much consideration, Kjell made the decision to take back control over his pain and his body by stopping dialysis," his family said in a statement shared with People.
His loved ones described the toll kidney disease had taken over the years while praising the strength he showed throughout his illness.
"It was a long and painful journey, filled with countless battles to overcome, including the gradual loss of his bodily autonomy," the statement read.
Despite those challenges, the family said Nilsson never lost his fighting spirit.
"He was a spirit that refused to surrender."
They also reflected on the peace he found at the end of his life.
"The days leading up to his passing were filled with joy, gratitude, peace, and acceptance. He did it his way."
The family added that doctors had once doubted how long he would survive, but his determination proved them wrong.
"That mindset didn't just overcome the impossible, it gave Kjell more than four decades of life that he might otherwise never have had. More importantly, it gave him the chance to continue raising his five sons, whom he loved beyond words."
Born in Sweden in 1949, Nilsson first gained recognition as a competitive bodybuilder before relocating to Australia, where he pursued acting.
His breakthrough came in 1981 when director George Miller cast him as Lord Humungus, the ruthless leader of a violent gang in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, opposite Mel Gibson's Max Rockatansky.
Lord Humungus became one of the defining villains of 1980s action cinema owing to Nilsson's imposing physical presence and chilling screen performance.
The film's international success helped expand the Mad Max franchise worldwide and has continued to influence action and post-apocalyptic filmmaking.
Beyond Mad Max 2, Nilsson appeared in films including Turkey Shoot and The Pirate Movie, as well as several Australian television productions.
Outside of acting, he remained deeply involved in bodybuilding and worked as a respected weight-training coach.
Nilsson's family said he remained grateful for both his personal and professional life until the very end.
"In his final days, Kjell spoke often of how grateful he was for his bodybuilding and coaching career, for the life he built between the two countries he called home, Sweden and Australia, and for the opportunity to inspire and connect with people around the world through his iconic role as The Lord Humungus."
His representative, Chris Carbaugh, also paid tribute to the actor, telling TMZ that "Kjell was a wonderful person." Carbaugh added that Nilsson embraced his Mad Max legacy, inspired many through his coaching career, and deeply appreciated the fans who continued to celebrate his work decades after the film's release.
The family's statement ended with a simple message reflecting the impact Nilsson leaves behind,
"That legacy will never die."
Nilsson's unforgettable portrayal of Lord Humungus ensured his place in cult film history, while those closest to him say he will be remembered just as much for the resilience and generosity he showed off screen.
