The committee session will be held in Busan from July 19 to 29, marking the first time South Korea has hosted the internationally significant UNESCO gathering.
BIGBANG leader G-Dragon has been appointed honorary ambassador for the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, adding another prestigious title to his career as he takes on a role promoting cultural preservation and international peace.
The announcement was made by the Korea Heritage Service on Friday, July 3. The committee session will be held in Busan from July 19 to 29, marking the first time South Korea has hosted the internationally significant UNESCO gathering.
According to the Korea Heritage Service, G-Dragon was chosen not only because of his worldwide influence as a K-pop artist but also for the efforts of his public-interest organization, the JUSPEACE Foundation. The agency said the foundation's work addressing social issues through art and encouraging public engagement closely aligns with UNESCO's mission of fostering peace and international cooperation.
As part of his responsibilities, G-Dragon will participate in UNESCO's Heritage in Peace campaign, which officially launches on July 10. The initiative is being jointly organized by UNESCO and the JUSPEACE Foundation to raise awareness about the need to safeguard World Heritage sites threatened by war, climate change, and natural disasters.
The singer is set to appear in promotional videos and participate in campaign events aimed at encouraging people around the world to support heritage conservation efforts. Funds raised through the campaign will be donated to the UNESCO World Heritage Fund to help preserve endangered cultural and natural sites.
Sharing his thoughts on the appointment, G-Dragon expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent the historic event. He said, "I consider it an extremely meaningful honour to serve as the ambassador for the first UNESCO World Heritage Committee session to be held in South Korea."
He also emphasized the importance of protecting cultural heritage for future generations, saying, "As World Heritage sites are a shared asset that all of humanity must protect together, I want to convey a message of peace that resonates with many people and inspires them to take action."
The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will take place in Busan from July 19 to 29, representing a major milestone as South Korea hosts the event for the first time.
Through his role as honorary ambassador, G-Dragon is expected to encourage greater public participation in preserving World Heritage sites while promoting global unity, cultural appreciation, and cooperation through the Heritage in Peace campaign.
