Emma Navarro's extended absence from the WTA Tour earlier this season received new context during ESPN's coverage of her Wimbledon third-round match against Marta Kostyuk, when broadcaster Chris McKendry revealed that the American has hypothyroidism.
The disclosure provided the clearest public explanation yet for the health issues that forced Navarro to miss several tournaments earlier this year. Neither Navarro nor her team has publicly confirmed the diagnosis, although the 24-year-old has previously spoken about experiencing thyroid-related health problems.
Navarro's season was disrupted after she withdrew from the Miami Open, the Charleston Open, and the Madrid Open, citing ongoing health struggles.
At the time, the former World No. 8 chose not to disclose a specific diagnosis, saying only that she was working closely with her medical team while recovering. The lengthy absence kept her off the tour for nearly three months before she returned to competition in May.
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, causing the body's metabolism to slow.

After making her comeback at the Italian Open, she captured the Strasbourg Open title—her third career WTA singles trophy and first on clay. She followed that performance by reaching the final of the Nottingham Open, carrying strong form into Wimbledon.
Her latest run continues the momentum, with the American reaching the latter stages of the grass-court major after previously advancing to at least the quarterfinals in each of the past two editions of the tournament.
Navarro's Wimbledon campaign ended in the third round on Saturday after a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 defeat to Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk. After battling through three-set victories over Anna Bondar and Yuliia Starodubtseva in the opening two rounds, the American was unable to overcome Kostyuk's aggressive baseline play despite forcing a deciding set.
Although her run came to an end, reaching the third round marked another encouraging step in her return after a three-month absence earlier this season.
