On March 17, Denis Fadeev, a postgraduate student in the Department of General and Experimental Physics at Altai State University, participated in the in-person round of the All-Russian Engineering Competition. The event took place at the Russian Technological University MIREA (RTU MIREA).

The All-Russian Engineering Competition aims to develop human resources for high-tech industries, engage young people in solving promising production and technical problems of strategic importance to Russian industry, and improve the quality of engineering education. It fosters effective collaboration between universities and enterprises in the real sector of the economy.

Denis Fadeev presented his development in non-destructive testing, which involves eddy current testing of materials and flaw detection. He had submitted the work remotely, and after expert evaluation, he was named a semifinalist.

"My research examines the properties of materials that conduct electric current—specifically aluminum and various types of steel—after laser cutting. During laser cutting, the metal in the cutting area heats up. Thanks to the technologies used in industrial lasers, this heating is confined to a small heat-affected zone, ranging from 0.5 to 3 mm. However, even this seemingly minor effect alters the material's physical properties, such as hardness, conductivity, and surface resistance. These changes can impact the final product's characteristics. My work focuses on the electromagnetic properties of materials subjected to laser cutting. Studies of electromagnetic characteristics are essential for materials used in electric motor assembly. Using the eddy current method, we assess the material's conductivity and magnetic permeability. This helps evaluate the effects of laser cutting on the material and will enable more precise cutting of materials with known parameters in the future," explained Denis Fadeev.

Experts highlighted his significant publications on the topic, as well as awards for participation in prestigious scientific events and victories in competitions for grant and scholarship support. During the in-person stage in Moscow, semifinalists took part in a program to build relationships with industrial partners—representatives of high-tech companies in the real economy. Participants learned about current industry needs, along with opportunities for further collaboration and implementation of promising scientific and technical projects.

Participation in the All-Russian Engineering Competition allowed Denis to explore a network of promising scientific and technical companies working in various areas of non-destructive testing. These companies offer sites for scientific internships as part of the project.
