If you've been holding out for a 2028 Chevrolet Camaro, it looks like you're going to have to be a little more patient. A report from GM Authority says the next-generation Camaro isn't expected to arrive until 2029, but it may be worth the wait. The report says the revived Camaro will likely sport four doors for the first time in its history, offer automatic and manual transmissions, and house a high-performance V-8 engine.

The 2029 Camaro will ride on GM's Alpha 2 architecture, which is an updated version of the platform that underpinned the previous Camaro model as well as the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans. This most likely means the Camaro will be rear-wheel drive, just as it has been in previous model years.

There's no word on the new Camaro's powertrain yet, but Chevy's already paired a turbocharged four-cylinder with the Alpha platform in the CT5, so it wouldn't be surprising to see something similar in the new Camaro. The GM Authority report says a high-performance variant has been confirmed, so we're also expecting a V-8 option, which would likely be a version of the sixth-generation small-block that's currently offered in the Corvette.

The Camaro will primarily compete with the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. The Mustang is only offered with two doors and either a four-cylinder or V-8 engine, while the Charger is offered as a two- or four-door model that houses Dodge's Hurricane inline-six engine. So, a potential four-door Camaro fitted with a V-8 would add a brand-new configuration to the muscle car lineup.

Chevy discontinued the Camaro after the 2024 model year, but reports of a revival started circulating earlier this year. Until now, it appeared the Camaro would make its return in 2028, with production beginning in fall 2027 alongside the next-generation CT5 at GM's Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan. However, neither vehicle has a confirmed production start date yet.
