Federal courts are increasingly shutting down attempts by the Trump administration to get away with all sorts of nefarious plots. As Colorado Public Radio reports, an effort to get its hands on sensitive voter information in Colorado was rejected this week:

A U.S. District Court judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit filed against the state of Colorado by the Trump Administration over access to sensitive voter data.

Denver-based U.S. District Court Judge Philip Brimmer said that the Department of Justice failed to provide a sufficient reason for obtaining unredacted voter information and that the federal government is not entitled to the data under federal law. Brimmer was nominated to the court by George W. Bush in 2008…

…Last year, the DOJ asked a number of states to turn over all records relating to the 2024 federal election, including sensitive voter information such as driver’s license numbers and the last four digits of Social Security numbers. The state did not comply.

“The DOJ is trying to collect a lot of data on American voters, and they do not have a legal right to the sensitive information they’re asking for, and we don’t trust what they’re trying to do with it,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold in an interview with CPR News in March.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office already gave the Department of Justice a copy of the state’s “master voter file,” something that is public information anyway. But the DOJ wanted additional information, including birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and signatures.

The Trump administration responded to Tuesday’s ruling by calling it “unlawful,” which is funny given that the DOJ has yet to succeed in similar efforts. As the website Law and Crime explains:

The Trump administration has now gone 0-20 in court challenges over efforts to obtain states’ “unredacted” voter rolls.

A Monday loss in Colorado before U.S. District Judge Philip Brimmer, a George W. Bush appointee, marks the 19th time a federal district court has ruled against the U.S. Department of Justice. In one instance, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit also ruled against the DOJ – affirming a lower court ruling in favor of Michigan.

The latest ruling means that every court to have considered the issue has ruled in favor of the states and against the Trump administration.

President Trump has tried to break every norm and rule that he can find. It’s encouraging to see that at least some of the institutions of our Democracy are still intact.
