One of the strengths of the Nintendo Switch 2 is its ability to give older games a second life, and Square Enix’s acclaimed HD-2D RPG series is next in line. Nintendo has announced that both Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are coming to the Switch 2 with enhanced visuals and smoother performance, giving newcomers and returning adventurers another reason to revisit Orsterra and Solistia. Both titles will release on October 1, 2026, with pre-orders available now.

Both titles will be available in physical and digital editions, making the transition to Nintendo’s latest console an easy one regardless of how players prefer to build their game library. Both physical and digital versions will run $59.99 for each title, with a digital bundle containing both titles for just $74.99.

While neither game is receiving new story content, the Switch 2 versions do include technical improvements that should make the already striking HD-2D presentation look even better. Nintendo confirmed that both games will feature improved resolution and higher frame rates, taking advantage of the newer hardware to deliver a smoother experience during exploration, combat, and the series’ signature visual effects.

The original Octopath Traveler debuted in 2018 and quickly became one of the flagship examples of Square Enix’s HD-2D art style, blending detailed pixel art with modern lighting and depth-of-field effects. Its commercial and critical success helped spark a wave of similarly styled RPGs, including Triangle Strategy, Live A Live, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, and, of course, Octopath Traveler II.

Released in 2023, Octopath Traveler II expanded on nearly every aspect of its predecessor. A new cast of eight protagonists, a more interconnected world, additional combat mechanics, and improved storytelling helped establish it as one of the strongest turn-based RPGs of the current generation. Bringing both games to Switch 2 gives players the opportunity to experience the complete series with enhanced performance on a single platform.

Nintendo’s continued focus on upgraded versions of existing titles also highlights an important part of the Switch 2 strategy. Rather than leaving acclaimed games behind on aging hardware, the company is steadily building a library where fan favorites can benefit from improved visuals and performance without requiring full remakes.
