Two years after the McKinney Islamic Association halted plans for a larger mosque in response to opposition from neighbors and city officials, the organization is once again seeking approval for an expansion in Collin County.
The association would like to build a campus on Virginia Parkway. But again, the group is facing opposition, this time over new plans for a sanctuary, classroom building and gym at a site near its current mosque. The McKinney City Council is scheduled to decide whether to approve the plans Aug. 4.
City records show 67 pages of emails from residents, many of whom are opposed to the plan. The challenges from some neighbors include traffic concerns, safety risks, and compatibility with the surrounding neighborhoods. Some residents flatly stated they are opposed because it is a Muslim establishment.
The congregation has grown since it began meeting at its current mosque in 2014 and since the association was established in 1997, according to past leadership. The new space is intended to accommodate hundreds of worshippers.
In 2024, the association asked the city to rezone more than five acres of land to allow for a larger building, but those plans were denied after public opposition. The request was withdrawn. McKinney resident Mousa Abu Daabes spoke in support of the mosque’s expansion at a 2024 planning and zoning meeting. He said he remembers when there were just five Muslim families in McKinney in the 1990s. He helped start the foundation for the McKinney Islamic Association.
The Aug. 4, 2026 request is no longer one large building, but three smaller ones. The meeting is set for 6 p.m.
