Just when it appeared the Blue Jays were finally set when it came to the club’s starting rotation, which increased by two arms following two acquisitions, the injury bug struck again.

It has been a season-long theme that actually dates back to spring training, one the Jays can’t avoid, it would seem.

Trey Yesavage has had an uneven season due, you guessed it, to injuries.

The right-hander issued one walk and kept the Houston Astros hitless through two innings.

While warming up to start the third, his left knee buckled.

Unceremoniously and quite abruptly, his night ended.

Into the fray came Chad Dallas, who had two runners on base following two walks when he faced Isaac Paredes with two outs in a scoreless game.

Dallas struck out Paredes swinging.

The fourth inning wasn’t kind to Dallas, as the Astros scored twice with two outs, stranding runners at second and third.

It was then revealed, per the club, that Yesavage left the game because of left knee discomfort.

Dallas was in a 2-2 game when he came out to start the fifth inning, once again his inability to control the zone leading to walks and the Astros regaining the lead.

The fatal blow came off the bat of Taylor Trammell, who sent a no-doubter into the seats in right field to give the Astros a 6-2 lead on a three-run dinger, one night after he mistakenly and foolishly thought he had gone yard on a flyout.

Dallas allowed six earned runs on seven hits, while walking four in his three innings.

For the second game in a row, the Jays turned to Braydon Fisher and Brendon Little, while Mason Fluharty was used to start the eighth inning.

The game, in the final analysis, turned when Yesavage left.

There was no update in the immediate aftermath of Toronto’s 7-2 loss to the Astros.

The following are three takeaways on a night Josh Smith, acquired at the trade deadline from the Texas Rangers, made his debut in a pinch-hit role in the ninth when he hit into a game-ending double play, a night when Toronto’s record dropped to 53-61 following the loss.

VLAD JR. WATCH

Including Tuesday’s game at Daikin Park in Houston, there were a total of 49 games remaining to be played by the Jays, 49 opportunities for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to rediscover his power stroke.

The days of discussing exit velocity are long gone at a delicate time in Vlad Jr.’s season.

If the issue involved a quick fix, it already would have been addressed, given all the tools available to a club known for its deep pockets and ability to provide its players with anything and everything necessary to increase production.

Among other issues is leaving runners in scoring position, which resurfaced in the third inning when Vlad Jr. grounded out to end the inning.

A first-pitch groundout ended the fifth.

In the eighth, yet another groundout ended the frame to give Vlad Jr. an 0-for-3 night that included a walk, his third hitless game in a row.

He now has 48 games to help turn his season around.

Vlad Jr. has not hit a homer since July 7, when the Jays were in San Diego.

It might not be any consolation, but he is a gamer.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION

Defensively, not much separates Myles Straw from Daulton Varsho when it comes to chasing down balls or sacrificing their bodies when makings outs.

In terms of arm strength, Straw throws better and it’s not even close.

When it comes to offence, Varsho has a decided edge, though fans of the Jays will point to his season-long struggles, a fair and valid criticism.

He will occasionally run into pitches and his time in Toronto did feature stretches of power and slug, areas Straw lacks.

Straw figures to be the incumbent in centre field following the trade which sent Varsho to the Astros.

For the second game in a row, Straw started in centre and hit ninth in the order.

Nathan Lukes started in right field and hit leadoff.

Lukes is also an option to play centre field.

It’s clear, though, the Jays will have to address the centre-field position this off-season, however long it lasts knowing a work stoppage remains a distinct possibility.

Straw had a double in the third inning, and then had an RBI triple in the fifth to bring in Toronto’s first run. Moments later, Straw scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2.

On Monday, Straw had two hits in Toronto’s 3-1 win.

PITCHING UPDATE

Jameson Taillon was born in Florida, but his parents are Canadian, and he has played for Team Canada twice at the World Baseball Classic.

As a free agent four years ago, the right-hander and the Jays had preliminary discussions before Taillon came to terms with the Chicago Cubs.

His time in Chi-town expired last week when the club designated him for assignment, leading to the trade to the Jays.

Taillon is scheduled to make his debut with the Blue Jays on Wednesday in the series finale in Houston.

Perhaps a change in scenery will provide a lift for a pitcher who has not been good, to put it mildly, this season

His Canadian connection adds a layer of excitement.

News of Taillon making his debut wasn’t the lone nugget dropped by the Jays, whose acquisition of Taillon and Jose Soriano has forced a change to the rotation, which was supposed to feature six pitchers, that is until Yesavage left Tuesday’s outing.

Dylan Cease, the club’s ace, will have his scheduled start pushed back to Thursday when the Jays make a pit stop at Wrigley Field to compensate for an earlier meeting postponed due to weather.

Those hoping to see Kevin Gausman face his former team will be disappointed to learn the Cubs have announced the veteran right-hander will pitch this weekend in Kansas City in his Cubs debut.

Soriano, whom the Jays acquired from the L.A. Angels, makes his debut Friday in the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, followed by Max Scherzer on Saturday and Shane Bieber in Sunday’s finale.

Wednesday looms as a big occasion for Taillon, who needs to get his career back on track, preferably sooner than later; Jays are well known in the industry for extracting the best out of pitchers; for his part, Taillon remains confident he can regain his form in a new surrounding; RHP Hunter Brown is scheduled to start for Houston (2:10 p.m. first pitch) in the series rubber match.
