It might be a world-famous creperie boasting legions of celebrity fans, but that hasn't stopped La Creperie de Hampstead from receiving a less-than-impressive zero hygiene rating. 

The creperie, which has been hailed 'the no.1 Creperie in Europe' and a 'local landmark', has welcomed legions of celebrity customers since opening in the upmarket north London neighbourhood in 1977.

Former One Direction star Harry Styles and models Kate Moss and Kelly Brook are known to like the crepes, as does Kimberley Walsh from pop group Girls Aloud - while Hollywood A-listers Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis visited the small crepe shack on a trip to London.

But following an inspection by the Food Standards Agency on June 9, the celebrity hot spot, known for lengthy queues, was told 'urgent improvement' is necessary in the management of food safety.

Specifically, extra care is needed in 'ensuring that food sold or served is safe to eat' and evidence is required that 'staff know about food safety'.

Additionally, 'major improvement' was necessary in the 'hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage'.

Major improvement was also considered vital in the 'cleanliness and condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene'.

Despite the poor rating, social media users are known to flock to the London stall, each keen to test 'Harry Styles' favourite crepe', including TikTok user @rtoocute, who visited last month and said the singer has the 'best taste'. 

The crepe stall sells classic sweet options, such as the £7 La Crêpe Suzette and £8 Banana and Belgian Chocolate, alongside savoury choices, including the £10 Asparagus and Cheese and the £11 Ratatouille Galette with Ham.

The Daily Mail has reached out to La Creperie de Hampstead for comment.

The website explains that the stall, founded by 'Chef Extraordinaire Edward De Mesquita', is famous for 'its long queues, but once you taste that crepe you will look forward to queuing again'.

The creperie has been frequented by many celebrities, tourists, and locals, some who visit daily.​

'Chef de Mesquita is a dual citizen moving regularly between England and France, he is also a talented musician who has many accolades from his talents.'

La Creperie de Hampstead last made headlines in 2021 after being shut down by council officers in Hampstead under Covid regulations.

Due to concerns over customers not adhering to social distancing, Camden Council ordered La Creperie de Hampstead and its pancake rival based outside the King William IV pub next door to cease trading.

The council claimed the queues and crowds in the Hampstead area posed 'a serious and imminent threat to public health'. It said it had 'no option but to ask these businesses to stop trading'.

The creperies said they had installed social distancing measures and requested that customers wear masks.

The owners claimed they could not be held accountable for the public's transgressions.

At the time, Rédouane Ait Iich, manager of La Creperie de Hampstead, said he felt 'harassed' by the council. 'They have come to inspect the creperie two or three times a week - each time with different rules,' he said.
