A new undergraduate program in data science will be offered at the University of North Carolina Wilmington beginning in August 2026.

Approved by the UNC Board of Governors in May, the interdisciplinary program blends mathematics, statistics and computer science, equipping students with a comprehensive foundation for understanding and working with complex data. Through a curriculum that emphasizes both theory and practical application, students will learn to collect, analyze, visualize and model data while developing the technical expertise and communication skills necessary to tackle real-world challenges.

“This program trains students to think critically, a key skill valued in any career path,” said Xuemei Chen, program coordinator and associate professor in the UNCW Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “In addition, students in this program will work with real data in partnership with corporate or cutting-edge research, an experience employers look for in applicants.”

The new degree program is designed to help students thrive in the rapidly evolving landscape of data science and artificial intelligence. By combining foundational knowledge with hands-on learning opportunities, the program uniquely positions graduates to adapt to new technologies and emerging trends.

Students in the program will gain experience working with modern data tools and techniques while strengthening their ability to communicate insights clearly, an essential skill in today’s data-driven decision-making environments. The course of study is structured to support multiple pathways, enabling graduates to either enter the workforce directly or continue their education through advanced graduate programs.

Career prospects in the field remain exceptionally strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, data science-related occupations are projected to see 34% job growth between 2024 and 2034, ranking fourth among all occupations and underscoring the increasing demand for skilled professionals.

UNCW’s commitment to data science education extends beyond the undergraduate level. The university also offers a Master of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, providing students with a clear pathway to advanced study and specialized expertise.

“With this new bachelor’s program, we are strengthening our academic portfolio to meet workforce needs while creating opportunities for students to pursue cutting-edge careers,” said Ron Vetter, founding dean of the College of Science and Engineering. “Whether students choose to begin their careers after graduation or advance into our master’s program, they will be well-prepared for the future.”
