At Butting Heads Farm in Gardiner (where we raise everything from pigs to produce), we believe the Farm Bill should support responsible family farms and preserve states’ ability to set agricultural standards that reflect the values of their communities. That is why we urge Congress to reject the Save Our Bacon Act and ensure it is not included in the Farm Bill.

This proposal would undermine these values by repealing existing state agricultural laws and preventing future ones that promote healthy food, responsible farming practices and consumer choice. States play a critical role in protecting food standards that reflect the needs and values of their communities. Removing that authority lowers the bar for food production and favors large industrial operations over family farms that invest in higher standards.

At a time when many Americans struggle to access nutritious food, the Save Our Bacon Act would make it harder for farms like ours to continue offering healthy, humanely raised options. Policies that weaken food standards do not support public health, rural economies or the future of farming.

For the reasons outlined, we urge Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King to oppose the Save Our Bacon Act and work to ensure this harmful proposal isn’t included in the Farm Bill.
