A man shot and killed by Las Vegas police following a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle last week pointed a gun at officers before they opened fire, a Metropolitan Police Department official said Monday.

Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren told reporters that Shane Hansen, 53, was fatally shot Thursday afternoon in the 500 block of Miller Avenue, near West Carey Avenue and North Commerce Street, after police received information about a stolen vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip. Koren said the pursuit was initiated after an automated license plate reader detected a possible stolen vehicle in the area of Flamingo Road and Linq Lane.

What followed was a miles-long pursuit that ended in a mobile home’s backyard on Miller Avenue, where officers David Plascencia and Steven McIntire fired after Hansen raised a loaded .357 revolver toward them, Koren said.

According to the Clark County coroner’s office, Hansen died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Body camera footage shown during Monday’s briefing captured two encounters between Hansen and officers.

In the first interaction, footage shows an officer chasing Hansen, who appears to drop his handgun then quickly pick it up. He is seen continuing into the backyard of the mobile home. The officer warned other officers that Hansen was armed.

“Put the gun down,” the officer tells a man, who Koren identified as Hansen. “I’m gonna shoot you! Put the gun down.”

Moments later, another body camera angle showed one of the officers shouting at Hansen to drop his weapon before the two officers opened fire.

Koren said Plascencia and McIntire were each armed with 9mm handguns and fired a total of seven rounds. Plascencia, 33, has been employed with Metro since 2017. McIntire, 37, has been with the department since 2022. The two have been placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, Koren said.

Had Hansen survived, he would have faced charges including three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person, resisting arrest with a firearm, kidnapping, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evading and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, Koren said.

“When someone points a firearm at our cops, it unfortunately puts us in a position where our cops have to take deadly force action, and that’s what happened in this case,” Koren said.

Thursday’s shooting marked the seventh Metro-involved shooting of 2026, Koren said. It was the department’s fourth fatal shooting this year.

Koren also played footage from a Metro drone launched after officers were alerted of the stolen vehicle. It showed a blue vehicle driving near Spring Mountain Road and Interstate 15. The driver, who Koren identified as Hansen, evaded initial contact from police, prompting an authorized pursuit.

“Officers converged on that area and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop,” Koren said, adding the vehicle was seen driving into oncoming traffic and disobeying other traffic laws. “He fled at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly during rush hour.”

The vehicle continued for nearly 5 miles before it stopped near the location of the shooting. Three occupants, including Hansen, got out of the car. The other two were taken into custody, Koren said.

Koren declined to name the other vehicle occupants, but he said they appeared to be acquaintances of Hansen and surrendered immediately.

Koren also defended Metro’s decision to initiate a pursuit with Hansen because of the “clear danger” he posed to public safety. He also credited Metro’s drone program for quickly locating Hansen.

“If you flee from LVMPD, we’re going to pursue you,” Koren said. “We’re going to hold you accountable.”
