Derby County secured a pre-season friendly win over Mansfield Town as second-half goals from youngsters Charlie Smith and Cruz Allen helped seal a 3-1 victory.
In a team largely made up of fringe first-team and academy players, with the rest of the squad on duty at Burton Albion tomorrow, Derby took the lead when Dajaune Brown converted a fine cross from Lars-Jorgen Salvesen.
But Stags had enough quality to cause John Eustace's side trouble and they equalised when Michael Smith was released on the right-hand side.
The striker, a one-time Derby target, chopped the ball onto his left foot and curled an effort past the outstretched Josh Vickers, who then had to make a terrific save to deny the dangerous David McGoldrick before the break.
After the interval, Smith came close to a second when he rattled the bar from a corner before Owen Eames charged forward from the centre of midfield to set-up Salvesen who shot straight at Lewis.
After a quiet first half, chances were coming at both ends as Vickers dived to thwart McGoldrick's drive from outside the box before Derby took the lead when Charlie Smith found the bottom corner with a lovely strike from 20 yards.
You sensed there were further goals to come and Derby gave themselves some daylight when Allen steered past Harris after good work from Corey Blackett-Taylor.
At the other end, Rhys Oates was close to Mansfield's second goal as his scuffed shot hit the base of the post.Ratings here....

That's it!
All over and Derby have won 3-1. Good win. Enjoyable second half. The kids were good. Impressed by Eames. Dajaune Brown was also a handful.
Verdicts to come.

Off the post
Rhys Oates has nearly pulled a goal back for the Stags but his shot has hit the woodwork.

Was a great finish
Allen showed very good composure. Didn't panic. Made sure the ball was fully under control before unleashing his shot. A lot of players may have just snatched at that opportunity.
And I've enjoyed watching Eames this evening. First thought is always to go forward.

GOAAAAAAAAAAL
And it's 3-1. Kenzo does well as he picks out CBT and the winger comes forward to clip a cross into the feet of Allen, who keeps his composure superbly to fire past Lewis.

It's been good to be fair
I've enjoyed this game to be honest. First half wasn't much to write about, but the second half has been really good.
Both teams have had chances, Eames is charging forwards at every opportunity and it does feel like there are more goals in this game.

GOAALLLLLLL
Derby make it 2-1. Charlie Smith finds the far corner from 20 yards. Lovely finish from the midfielder. Caressed it out of the reach of Lewis who couldn't get there.

SAVE
Josh Vickers stops Mansfield from going ahead as he denies David McGoldrick's powerful drive from the edge of the box.
31st Jul20:10 BST
Looks like
Blackett-Taylor is coming on.
31st Jul20:09 BST
CLOSE
Just as I type that, Eames bursts from the centre of midfield and slips a pass into the run of Salvesen who shoots straight at the keeper.
Should have gone across him.
31st Jul20:08 BST
It's a lively game
Obviously there is a big size difference between some of the Mansfield players and Derby's academy lads, but they're holding their own to be fair. Eames has been very lively.
31st Jul20:06 BST
At the other end
Brown appears to be fouled by Oshilaja as he's going clean through but the referee lets it go. Eustace = not happy.
31st Jul20:05 BST
Cleared
Goudmijn clears at the near post, but the ball comes back to McGoldrick who lets fly from the edge of the box with a deflection taking it out for another corner.
This time Nathan Moriah-Welsh's corner comes to Michael Smith at the back post but his close-range effort smashes the bar,

We are back under way
And Mansfield immediately come forward to win a corner.

Corner Stags
Roberts sprays a wonderful pass out wide to Akins who cuts inside, has a go from outside the box, but it flies off Canoville and out for a corner which is eventually cleared by Brown.
Derby counter at pace but Cruz Allen takes a whack on the way through. The referee allows play to continue and the Stags then come forward themselves but McGoldrick's effort is off target.
31st Jul19:38 BST
Nearly 2-1 Stags
Tyler Roberts splits the Derby defence with a terrific ball over the top for McGoldrick. Vickers thought about coming off his line but then stopped.
McGoldrick runs through and everybody is expecting him to score, but Vickers stays big to make the save.
31st Jul19:31 BST
1-1
And the Stags are level. One-time transfer target, Michael Smith, escapes down the right, cuts inside onto his left.
He has McGoldrick in support but goes it alone and bends a terrific finish past the outstretched Vickers.
31st Jul19:29 BST
Close
Ball comes into the box where McGoldrick brings it under control and smashes a terrific effort that whistles past the upright. Vickers would have had no chance if it was on target.
31st Jul19:21 BST
1-0 Derby
And Derby have the lead. Nice goal too. Allen flicks the ball into the path of Salvesen who spots Dajaune Brown in acres of space.
The delivery is perfect and Brown guides it past Harry Lewis.
31st Jul19:19 BST
Unlucky
Decent work from Goudmijn sees him give the ball to Charlie Smith who takes aim from the edge of the box and his shot takes a nick to go out for a corner.
Goudmijn's delivery comes in, but the referee spots a foul.
31st Jul19:13 BST
Derby corner
Gill wins a corner for Derby which Goudmijn bends with venom into the box, but McGoldrick clears.
31st Jul19:11 BST
Corner
McGoldrick robs Goudmijn as Mansfield shift the ball out wide to Akins. His cross comes off Gill and goes out for a corner.
Derby clear it and try to break as Eames is denied a clear run at goal by a last-ditch challenge on the halfway line.
Mansfield soon come back on the attack and McGoldrick crashes a volley against the chest of Nyambe, but Derby eventually smuggle it away.
31st Jul19:06 BST
McGoldrick shows his class
He shows the youngsters how it's done as he wriggles free and sets Mansfield on the attack.
Akins comes down the right, feeds Roberts whose shot takes a deflection, comes back and hits him, and goes out for a goal kick.
31st Jul19:03 BST
McGoldrick reception
Derby fans pay McGoldrick their respects. Only had one season at the club, but what a season it was.
More than 25 goals scored and some of them were just incredible.
Anyway, Goudmijn has just tried to play the ball out wide and has hoofed it into touch.
31st Jul18:57 BST
Here we go then
The teams are out and we are getting ready to go. Good number of Derby fans have made the short journey.
Some wearing the new pink strip as well which is good to see.
David McGoldrick leading the line for Mansfield. Such a good player even though he's nearing 40. Loved watching him at Derby.

Latest on Liam Thompson
Liam Thompson is closing in on a move to Mansfield Town from Derby County as he looks set to leave the club for the League One promotion hopefuls.
DerbyshireLive revealed how the Stags' move for the academy graduate had been put on ice earlier this month with Thompson travelling with the Rams' squad for their pre-season trip to Austria.
But Mansfield remains determined to land one of their top targets this summer, and it is now expected that a deal to take the midfielder to the One Call Stadium is more of a case of when, not if, the move is completed.
Thompson was left out of tonight's friendly against the Stags as John Eustace named a team that was made up of fringe first-team and academy players which included Kenzo Goudmijn, Lars-Jorgen Salvesen and Ryan Nyambe.

Good evening
And welcome from the One Call Stadium where Derby County are in action tonight as part of a friendly double header over the weekend.
Expecting the entire squad to be given minutes over the two games with the first-team squad set to attend both games. I would think that some players will get longer tomorrow as the club prepares for the Lincoln City clash next weekend,
