I was devastated when my friend didn't invite me to her engagement party so I sent a text confronting her. Am I wrong for being so upset at her reply?

An Instagram post was all it took to unravel a decade-long friendship.

After spotting photos from an old friend's engagement party online, an Aussie woman, who chose to remain anonymous, realised she hadn't been invited.

Hurt and confused, she reached out with a message congratulating the bride-to-be, but admitted she felt 'blindsided' by the exclusion.

What followed was a deeply personal exchange that laid bare something many adults experience but rarely discuss: the heartbreak of discovering you're no longer as important to someone as you once thought.

As Australians move through their late 20s and 30s, friendships often become casualties of changing lives. Careers gather pace, people move cities, relationships become more serious - and children enter the picture.

Friendships don't always end with a dramatic argument. More often, they slowly fade until a birthday, engagement or wedding forces both people to realise they had very different ideas about where they stood.

That was exactly what happened for the two women at the centre of this situation.

The pair had been friends for around 10 years, but had drifted apart recently.

One Instagram post was all it took to unravel a decade-long friendship

After spotting photos from an old friend's engagement party online, a woman realised she hadn't been invited

They no longer shared the same friendship group, hadn't caught up one-on-one for three years, and the bride-to-be said she hadn't invited the woman to one of her birthdays in six years.

Still, the excluded friend believed they remained close enough to celebrate life's biggest milestones together.

'I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel blindsided ... I know where I stand when it comes to when I have my big milestones so thanks. 'I think I valued our friendship more than you,' she said.

The bride-to-be apologised for her friend feeling hurt, but explained that the engagement party had included only family members and her bridal party as the venue was small.

She added that their friendship had begun to change long before the invitations were sent.

Although she had become engaged almost a year earlier, she said her friend had never congratulated her, despite the pair crossing paths several times.

She also recalled being invited to her friend's birthday dinner the previous year, only to be given the wrong restaurant and left waiting alone for more than 30 minutes before being told where everyone actually was.

'I didn't say anything at the time and still came to celebrate you,' she replied. 'I'm sharing this now so you understand my perspective too.'

Her friend acknowledged the birthday mix-up and said she had apologised at the time, but argued she had always been the one trying to keep the friendship alive.

'I barely saw you even to congratulate you,' she wrote.'I'm always the one initiating plans.'

She explained she had wanted to congratulate her in person rather than over text, and said every attempt to organise a catch-up had been met with the response that she was 'too busy'.

'The party wasn't limited and friends were there so I felt hurt seeing it on Instagram,' she wrote.

The bride-to-be clarified that the guests her friend had seen were members of her bridal party rather than a wider circle of friends, and insisted the decision had nothing to do with lingering resentment over the birthday dinner.

'A simple congratulations text would've been fine,' she replied.

The exchange ultimately reached an impasse.

'If you value the person, you don't hold a grudge to not invite them,' the friend wrote.'You hold a grudge, I let things go ... [not inviting me to] such a big milestone is unjustified.'

'I don't think you understand what I'm saying, but that's okay. I am sorry you feel hurt,' the bride-to-be responded.

The conversation struck a nerve because it reflects an increasingly familiar stage of adult life

The conversation struck a nerve because it reflects an increasingly familiar stage of adult life.

Unlike romantic relationships, friendships rarely have a clear ending; there is often no formal breakup conversation or mutual decision to part ways.

Instead, people become busier, messages take longer to answer, catch-ups become less frequent, and priorities gradually shift.

By the time someone notices the friendship has changed, the other person may have quietly accepted it months or even years earlier.

The experience is becoming increasingly common against the backdrop of Australia's growing loneliness epidemic.

Research has shown loneliness is affecting Australians across every age group, but many experts say adulthood presents unique challenges.

Once the built-in social structures of school and university fall away, maintaining close friendships requires deliberate effort, often competing with demanding careers, partners, mortgages and young families.

Relationship expert Louanne Ward said friendships are challenged after your teenage years and increasingly difficult after the age of 35, when people's lifestyles drastically change.

'People settle down, have kids, and sometimes jealousy comes into play. You're in different stages in life and that's okay. People have lives and you might only see someone a few times a year or not at all,' she said.

Psychologists have also noted that social media can make these moments particularly painful.

Milestones that once might have passed unnoticed are now broadcast online, meaning people sometimes discover they have drifted from someone's inner circle through an Instagram story or Facebook album rather than an honest conversation.

Many Reddit users believed neither woman was entirely wrong.

Instead, they said the exchange showed what happens when two people continue measuring the same friendship by different standards.

'Friendships expire,' one wrote.

Others sympathised with the excluded friend, saying that seeing such a significant life event unfold online would be painful regardless of how much the friendship had changed.
