As Oceana celebrates its 25th anniversary, CEO Jim Simon sat down with Ted Danson, longtime ocean advocate and Oceana Board Member. They discussed Oceana’s beginnings, accomplishments, and what continues to bring them hope for the future.
“Experience gives me hope,” Simon said. “The number of policy changes we’ve been able to win to improve the oceans shows we can do this and we can do more.”
They discussed examples of significant Oceana victories over the years, from helping to reform fisheries laws in Chile to stopping bottom trawling across 90% of the U.S. West Coast.
After 25 years of policy wins for the ocean, Simon and Danson are thankful to Oceana’s supporters, and excited about what is next.
Oceana will be launching campaigns for the first time in Ghana this year, and they reflect on the vital role healthy oceans play for coastal communities, providing both food and livelihoods.
“We can make this happen,” Danson said. “To be part of a movement like that, to me, it’s the biggest joy.”
