After helming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton knows the drill when it comes to keeping Marvel’s secrets.

He’ll smile, tell interviewers he’s excited, and warn fans to see the movie opening weekend if they want to avoid spoilers.

Now playing in theatres, Brand New Day follows up 2021’s tremendously successful Spider-Man: No Way Home and finds Tom Holland’s Peter Parker once again anonymously protecting New York City as a workaholic crimefighter.

With their memories of Peter scrubbed by Doctor Strange at the end of No Way Home, his girlfriend MJ (Holland’s real-life wife Zendaya) and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) don’t know who he is as he works in relative obscurity.

Spidey’s day-to-day crimefighting is upended when he begins to undergo a genetic transformation and encounters an invisible, body-hopping villain.

A few other details have been revealed. Screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who’ve written the past three Spidey films, have added an assortment of cameos to the mix, including Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jon Bernthal as Punisher, as well as two notable surprise characters, one of whom is played by Stranger Things star Sadie Sink (her introduction garnered cheers at a screening we attended earlier this week).

Severance star Tramell Tillman pops up in a new role as the head of Damage Control — a prison that houses a collection of Spider-Man villains.

“To be able to work with Mark and Jon and Sadie and Jacob and Zendaya … Liza (Colón-Zayas) … this is an insane cast,” Cretton says in a virtual call from New York City.

If you’re hoping he’ll reveal which hero he most enjoyed directing, Cretton’s lips are sealed.

“I felt lucky to work with this cast,” is all he’ll offer up.

Almost as if on cue, Holland enters the frame to give Cretton an effusive hug. “I haven’t seen you yet. I just want to say hello,” he says, before apologizing profusely for interrupting our interview.

“I haven’t seen Tom yet,” Cretton quips.

Brand New Day is a different kind of superhero movie. Sure there are incredible fights — including one against the ninja assassins known as The Hand that’s among the best action sequences in any Marvel film — but Holland’s webslinger is paying a price for allowing MJ and Ned to slip out of his life and losing his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei).

There’s a cost to Strange’s spell that has affected Peter’s life years after the events of No Way Home. “It would be as though you never existed,” he warned.

The girl he loved has forgotten him. The friend with whom he shared a special handshake has moved on to a new circle of friends.

Peter longs for MJ and the life they once shared. More than anything, he wants to swing through the streets of the Big Apple with her in his arms — and he wants his best friend back.

It’s a character journey that Cretton gravitated toward — and one that shows a vulnerability that Marvel often shies away from in its superhero films.

“The essence of Peter Parker is a character that I’ve always felt connected to, and in this particular journey I felt close to the emotional arc that he’s on,” Cretton says.

Not a lot is known about the villain. All that Cretton will offer up is that this is the biggest threat Holland’s Spidey has faced in his four solo outings.

“I can say that this is quite possibly the most dangerous threat that he has come up against,” Cretton says. “It is a very unique threat. It’s a threat that he is literally the only person in the city who can sense. In many ways, this threat becomes the only thing that knows who he is. That’s the setup for our villain.”

He won’t say more beyond that. Cretton also hopes Marvel fans don’t spoil the film’s plot twists.

“I want people to be surprised. I love going to the movies and not knowing what I’m going to get,” he says. “I hope people seeing it opening weekend don’t spoil it for everyone else.”

But this is Marvel. He knows no matter how hard he pleads he won’t be able to keep a lid on those Spidey spoilers, including one cameo that takes place in a public bath.

“If you don’t want it to be spoiled, you should just get your ticket for opening weekend,” he says with a grin.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theatres.
