Josh Kerr looked up to leaden skies but insisted there was no place like home.
The world mile record holder starts as favourite for tonight's men's mile but admits he doesn't recognise Scotstoun from his first visit.
It's 15 years to the day since Kerr, then just 13, finished a distant fifth at the junior Scottish Championships here, while also recording what remain his personal bests in the shot put and high jump.
This time around, nothing but gold will do in a high-quality final that includes Australia's defending 1500m champion Ollie Hoare and rising star Cameron Myers.
Though it's fellow Scot Jake Wightman that Kerr claims is the one to watch.
"I've got so many happy memories here but it's always windy, they've made the place look like Hollywood now," said Kerr.
"Coming back to Scotland brings back so many happy memories, it just really levels me, but it's all about business now.
"Jake is in awesome shape and he's the kind of athlete who turns up in big championship races. The top guys all think they can win it. That's what makes this so exciting."
Myers talks as quick as he runs and is in no mood to play a supporting role, insisting he's been reading up on the story of the famous Miracle Mile at the Empire Games 72 years ago.
"You guys need to remember that Roger Bannister won gold while John Landy held the world record, so hopefully I can reverse the roles there, but we'll see," he said.
"It's a different ball game coming to a championship. You have to deal with a lot more factors. At the Olympics, Jakob Ingebrigtsen had run two seconds quicker than anyone else in the field and didn't get a medal.
"Championship racing is not about the time you have on paper, it's how you execute. I'm a competitor. I don't want to lose. I'm not going there to come second. Josh and the others know this."
Kerr spends most of the year living at altitude in New Mexico, hence his blended transatlantic accent.
But since his Diamond League world record, he's been back home in Edinburgh introducing his doctor wife, Larimar Rodriguez, to the haunts of his childhood.
"We've spent a lot of time doing what I did growing up, walking around the neighbourhood and seeing people I grew up with," he said.
"I've been showing her some of the places I trained and going on runs with her. It's been about resetting and not being too intense. Just being here reminded me of my roots and of how proud the younger version of myself would be.
"Fifteen years ago, I was a kid in a 'Commonwealth Games hopeful' T-shirt, and now I've got this amazing opportunity to do something special."
