Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has paid an emotional tribute to Eddie Howe after his departure from St James' Park was confirmed

Arsenal transfer target Bruno Guimaraes has paid tribute to Eddie Howe, hailing him as the "King of the club" in a heartfelt message to the departing Newcastle United head coach following confirmation of his exit. The club confirmed Howe's departure earlier today after five years at the helm.

It's another bitter blow for the Magpies during yet another summer of upheaval. Supporters had hoped for a calmer summer interlude than last year, with Alexander Isak's transfer saga dominating the headlines and causing unrest at St. James' Park.

Fast forward 12 months, and the picture looks just as bleak. Newcastle have sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and are at risk of losing captain, Guimaraes, to Arsenal.

A 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in pre-season was the final act under Howe's tenure, a game in which Guimaraes missed as a result of an extended holiday. The 28-year-old has now taken to social media to share a heartfelt tribute to Howe, which read: "King of this club!

"Thanks for everything you've done for us. I loved our time together. You made me a better player and person. No words can say how much I enjoyed being your player. Wish you all the very best in your future gaffer."

In another post, Guimaraes added: "Ed, how could I ever put into words how grateful I am to you? First of all, I want to thank you for bringing me to this club. Thank you for everything you've done for me, for helping me grow not only as a player, but more importantly, as a person.

"You gave me the honour of being captain - of being your captain. That is something I will never forget and will carry with me for the rest of my life.

"Sharing the day-to-day with you and having you as my manager has been a privilege. I'm truly grateful for every opportunity, for the trust you placed in me, and for every moment we shared together.

"Without a doubt, you are one of the best managers I've ever had. Please know that my gratitude will always remain, and that you will always have a friend in me.

"Thank you for everything. I wish you and your family nothing but happiness, success, and all the very best. With affection, Bruno."

Guimaraes' future at the club remains uncertain, with Arsenal keen on securing the Newcastle midfielder's signature this summer, though the two sides have so far failed to reach an agreement.

Certain reports suggest Howe's exit was partly down to a feeling that Guimaraes would be sold to the Gunners, having already seen Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave the club.

Speaking about Guimaraes following the Bristol City defeat, Howe said: "What will be, will be. We can't control the forces that are at play here, we've just got to make sure that when Bruno comes back, we look after him and he trains well, which I'm sure he will do. And he makes a difference as he always has done.

"We've spoken numerous times. Assurances? I don't think you can push too hard for those. I've said many times we want players who are committed, and Bruno has always been committed. His training performances and his game performances have been outstanding, every time he's worn the shirt, he's played with the fans by his side. I'd love to see that continue."

For now, Guimaraes is expected to rejoin his Newcastle United squad in La Manga over the coming weekend, though other reports claim Arsenal are on the verge of a £77m agreement, which would alter those plans.
