Kirsten Dunst revealed that she was never asked to reprise the role of superhero love interest Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

She reached new heights of stardom as Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, playing opposite Tobey Maguire as the title character.

In 2021, nearly two decades after he first played the character, Tobey returned to the role in the Marvel film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The movie achieved a fan service coup, uniting three different actors who have played Spider-Man onscreen - Tobey, Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield.

But in a new interview with GQ Hype, Kirsten shared that she was never invited to join Tobey in the 2021 movie - and that she 'would have' done so if offered the job.

'It would be funny to be like, OK, let’s take Tobey and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film,' she reflected. 

Kirsten recently went viral for a frank interview in which she confessed that she would be willing to do another superhero movie for financial reasons.

'If asked to return to the genre, she would agree 'because you get paid a lot of money, and I have two children, and I support my mother,' she told Marie Claire. 

In her new GQ profile, she was asked about the sound-byte and remarked with a laugh: 'That’s the reason people do those movies!' 

Her decision to do the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films was, however, 'more innocent, I think,' having come at a time before superhero movies took over Hollywood.

'Sam Raimi was like a cult director, so it felt like we were making an indie disguised as a superhero film,' the former child star remembered.

Kirsten made her movie debut at the age of six, playing Mia Farrow's daughter in the Woody Allen segment of the anthology movie New York Stories.

She became a highly regarded child star at the age of 12 when she featured in Neil Jordan's Interview With A Vampire, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

During her teen years, she appeared in such critically acclaimed fare as The Virgin Suicides, the directorial debut of Sofia Coppola.

Kirsten and Sofia went onto become consistent collaborators, reuniting for the 2006 picture Marie-Antoinette and more recently for The Beguiled in 2017. 

However, the role that made her a global name was Mary Jane in the Spider-Man trilogy, which began in 2002 and ran to 2007. 

Nowadays, she is extremely selective about her projects, to the point that her upcoming movie Civil War will be her first release since her Oscar-nominated turn in Jane Campion's gay western The Power Of The Dog three years ago.

'It’s not hard to get roles. I just don’t want to work on things because most things aren’t very good. Let’s just call a spade a spade here,' she candidly confessed.

'I’ve been working since I was three. Most people who have worked this long are retired. I deserve to be picky,' the Melancholia blonde reasoned.
