What Is a B2B Content Strategy (And Why Does It Matter)

Many marketing teams are producing content consistently, across multiple platforms, often with a lot of effort and resource behind it. But when you start to ask simple questions about that content, why it exists, who it is really for, or how exactly it is contributing to business goals, the answers are not always clear.

It’s usually because there’s no strategy behind it. It is not that content is not being created. In most cases, there is no shortage of activity. The challenge is that the activity is not always guided by a clear sense of direction or strategy. This is usually where the issue begins.

This is the first part of our seven-part series on B2B content strategy. Each episode tackles a different piece of the strategy puzzle, and together they give you a complete, practical framework for building content that drives results. Whether you prefer to listen on your favorite podcast app or watch on YouTube, we've got you covered, this series is available in video and audio.

Here we're getting back to fundamentals - what a B2B content strategy is, why it matters, and how to think about it in a way that's practical rather than abstract.

What we cover (TL;DR):

A B2B content strategy gives your content direction, purpose, and alignment with business goals.

Without one, teams often produce a high volume of content that is difficult to measure or scale.

In this first part of our B2B content strategy series, we break down what a strategy is, how it differs from a plan or campaign, and the core questions every strategy should answer.

Why a B2B Content Strategy Matters More Than Ever

It’s never been easier to create content.

There are more AI tools available than ever before, more platforms to publish on, and more ways to produce content at scale. The barrier to entry has lowered significantly, which means most teams are capable of producing a high volume of content if they choose to.

But volume is not where most teams struggle, and it’s not the answer.

What we see far more often is content being created without a clear purpose behind it. It exists, it gets published, and sometimes it even performs well. But it is not always clear how it connects back to anything bigger and specifically business goals. In short, nothing is building.

If you want to explore this idea further, it connects directly to the concept covered in Why Not All Content Works Everywhere (And Why That's a Good Thing).

Without a B2B content strategy in place, content can easily become a series of disconnected activities. You might see occasional success, but it becomes difficult to understand why something worked, and even harder to repeat it consistently.

A well thought through strategy changes that. It gives you a clear sense of direction. It helps you make better decisions about what to create and where to focus. And it ensures that what you are doing is aligned with something meaningful for the business, rather than just keeping the content calendar full.

What Do We Mean by a B2B Content Strategy?

One area that often causes confusion is the difference between a strategy, a plan, and a campaign. They are closely related, but they serve very different purposes.

Time for an analogy!

Think about what it takes to build a house.

Before anyone picks up a tool or orders materials, you need a blueprint. Your strategy is the blueprint. It defines what you’re building and why.  You know what the finished result should look like. It might emphasize that you want room to expand in the future, or that you want it to be eco-friendly and focus on sustainability.

A content strategy works in exactly the same way. It defines the direction of your content. It is not about the detail of what you will post next week or which platform you will prioritize this quarter, it sits at a higher level than that.

A B2B content strategy should answer a some key questions:

  • Why are we creating content?
  • Who are we creating it for?
  • What are we going to talk about?
  • What do we want our audience to do?
  • Where will we show up?

It should also be closely connected to your wider business objectives—we go into that in detail in How Do You Align a B2B Content Strategy to Business Goals?

A strategy is about direction. It defines what you are trying to achieve and the principles that guide your decisions.

In practice, your strategy might exist over a longer timeframe, such as a year or even multiple years, with regular reviews built in to make sure it stays relevant as things change. More on this to come.

Plans and Campaign

A plan comes next. It is how you deliver the strategy.

For a house build, your plan would include the timelines, the materials, the people involved, and the order things happen in.

When it comes to content marketing, a plan brings the strategy to life, it includes the detail, timelines, responsibilities, platforms, and cadence of your content.

A campaign sits within that plan. It is a more focused, short to mid-term piece of activity. For a house build this could be laying the foundations, fitting the kitchen and bathroom, painting the walls.

With content marketing campaigns are often tied to a specific goal such as a product launch, event, or awareness push. For example, it could be an SEO campaign or a LinkedIn ads campaign – a burst of activity, within the plan, and in support of the strategy.

Everything should tie back to the strategy and that’s what strategy should always come first.

Without strategy, we can run into problems.

What Happens Without a Strategy?

It is possible to be very productive without having a strategy in place. We see this happen all the time.

You might have a strong team, and a steady flow of ideas. Content is being created, published, and often appear to be performing well.

But without a clear strategy behind it, that activity can become fragmented.

You may find that:

  • Content is being created without a clear purpose
  • Posting is inconsistent or reactive
  • It is difficult to link content back to business goals
  • There is no clear way to analyze what is working and improve over time

We think of this as “random acts of content”, where activity exists, but it is not connected in a way that builds momentum or long-term impact. The result is content that is hard to measure and hard to justify. Ultimately, it’s content that doesn’t really do anything at all.

We want to avoid random acts of content.

What Goes Into a B2B Content Strategy?

By now, we’re agreed that a B2B content strategy is important, right?

But what does a content strategy comprise of?

A strong B2B content strategy brings together several key components.

It starts with a clear understanding of your business goals and objectives, followed by a deeper understanding of your audience. That includes who they are, what matters to them, and how they move through their journey as a buyer. We explore exactly what this looks like in How Do You Align a B2B Content Strategy to Business Goals? and take it further in How to Use Competitor Analysis to Strengthen Your B2B Content Strategy.

From there, you begin to define:

You may also consider how your content will be resourced, whether that is in-house, through partners, or a combination of both.

We will be covering each of these areas in detail across the rest of the series, so if any of those components feel underdeveloped in your current strategy, stick with us. The next episode on aligning with business goals is a great place to continue.

Why Strategy Matters Even More in B2B

In B2B, the role of content tends to be more complex.

Sales cycles are longer, decisions involve multiple stakeholders, and the value of each deal is often higher.

Content plays an important role in building trust, educating your audience, and supporting decision-making over time.

Because of that, having a clear B2B content strategy becomes even more important.

It helps ensure that your content is not only consistent, but also relevant and useful at different stages of the buyer journey (there is often a buyer-committee vs a single buyer), and for different people involved in decision-making.

Your B2B Content Strategy Should Guide Day-to-Day Decisions

When you’re unsure what to do, it’s natural to look for a reference point.

In content marketing, that should be your strategy.

Think of it as a built-in decision filter:

If you can’t answer that clearly, it’s a sign the strategy isn’t defined well enough.

Because once you have a strategy in place, it should act as a reference point for your day-to-day decisions.

That makes it easier to focus your efforts and stay consistent over time. It also makes it much easier to say no to things that are not serving the bigger picture, which, for most content teams, is just as valuable as knowing what to say yes to.

None of that works, of course, if the strategy only lives in your head.

Getting Internal Buy-In

A B2B content strategy is only useful if it is understood and supported internally.

That means taking the time to share it with stakeholders and explain how it connects to business goals, as well as being clear on how it will be used day to day. A strategy that sits in a document nobody reads is kind of like a signpost in the middle of nowhere.

It is also helpful to define how long the strategy will run for, and how often it will be reviewed. For example, an 18-month strategy reviewed on a quarterly basis against agreed KPIs and business goals.

Having that structure in place makes it easier to manage expectations and keep everyone aligned.

It also helps you to handle difficult stakeholder requests – “remember the strategy we all agreed to, well your request doesn’t align with it, so it’s going to be no for now”.
