Oscar-winning musician Glen Hansard was killed Wednesday in a motorcycle crash. He was 56.

According to the BBC, Hansard died in a single-vehicle crash in his native Dublin early Wednesday morning and police are appealing for witnesses.

Hansard was part of two musical outfits — The Frames and Swell Season — as well as a renowned solo artist in his own right, with his 2015 release Didn’t He Ramble earning a Grammy nod. He also appeared in the 1991 musical drama The Commitments.

He gained worldwide fame for his role opposite Markéta Irglová in 2007’s Once, which also landed him an Academy Award for the song Falling Slowly.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said he was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Glen Hansard.”

“A talented musician and actor who made a significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape over many years,” Martin wrote on X.

Fellow singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran also paid tribute to Hansard on Facebook and Instagram, calling him an “incredible force.”

“He was such an incredible human,” Sheeran wrote. “I am grateful for the times we shared together.”

‘Deeply shocked’

Hansard was a popular presence around Dublin. For years, he led a famous Christmas Eve charity busk to help raise funds for a local community centre.

“With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard, who passed away in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin,” ATC Management, which represented Hansard, said in a statement provided to the BBC. “Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time. The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene.”

Hansard gained international acclaim for his role in Once, which cast him alongside his Swell Season bandmate Irglová in a story of two struggling musicians in Dublin who fall in love.

“I honestly really loved that experience, and was very proud of it and completely knocked out and overjoyed at the success that it’s brought,” the father of one said, reflecting on the success of Once in a 2015 interview with the Sun. “My whole life changed as a result of three weeks in Dublin with a couple of friends. But I’m not someone who sits down with my manager and says, ‘How do we continue with that?’ There isn’t any underlit table with me pushing around battleships. Sometimes when I think of U2, I get that image. But me, for better or worse, I’m just a songwriter. That’s my job. I write songs and I tour. And other things come along and they are very interesting. But these things are dictated by the songs.”

Hansard, who was married to poet Maire Saaritsa, went on to tour with Eddie Vedder in 2011 and released five solo records, including Rhythm and Repose (2012), Didn’t He Ramble (2015), Between Two Shores (2018), This Wild Willing (2019) and All That Was East Is West of Me Now (2023).

Last year, he and Irglová reteamed for a new Swell Season album titled Forward.

After dropping out of school at a young age, Hansard had built a life around music.

“This is the best life ever,” he exclaimed in an interview with the Sun in 2012. “If I were to complain about my life, I would have to be a f***ing idiot.”
