Europe's wildfire emergency is entering another dangerous phase, with massive fires continuing to burn across France and Spain while authorities warn that a new surge in temperatures could ignite additional blazes across southern Europe.
Satellite imagery from the EU's Copernicus program shows active fire zones stretching across parts of southwestern France, central Spain and other fire-prone regions, underscoring the scale of one of Europe's worst wildfire seasons in recent years.
More than 300,000 people have been forced from their homes in France and Spain during one of Europe's largest evacuation operations in decades, as firefighters race to contain flames before another heatwave intensifies fire conditions.
While several fires have been brought under partial control, emergency officials say the threat is far from over, with high temperatures, dry vegetation and gusty winds expected to increase the risk of fresh outbreaks through the week.
Where are the wildfires burning?The largest active wildfire remains in southwestern France, near Bordeaux in the Gironde region, where crews continue battling a blaze that has scorched an area reported to be roughly four times the size of Paris.
The fire has produced an extremely rare pyrocumulonimbus, a thunderstorm generated by intense wildfire heat which has sparked additional fires and complicated firefighting efforts.
In Spain, major fires continue in the country's central regions, including areas west of Madrid, where thousands of firefighters, military personnel and aircraft have been deployed.
Although some fire fronts have slowed, officials warn that extreme heat could quickly reverse recent gains.
Beyond France and Spain, elevated wildfire danger extends into Portugal, Italy, Greece and parts of the Balkans, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), with weather forecasts showing continued high-to-extreme fire risk across much of southern Europe.
Heatwave raises fears of new firesMeteorologists expect another intense heatwave to push temperatures into the upper 30s and low 40s Celsius (above 100°F) across parts of France and Spain, creating conditions that allow fires to spread rapidly.
Authorities have already issued high wildfire warnings across dozens of French departments, while Spanish regional governments remain on alert as dry vegetation and strong winds increase the likelihood of new ignitions.
EU deploys aircraft, firefighters and satellitesThe European Union has activated its Civil Protection Mechanism to reinforce national emergency services.
The EU has dispatched firefighting planes, helicopters and hundreds of personnel from multiple member states to assist France and Spain.
Copernicus satellites are also providing near-real-time emergency mapping to help crews track fire movement and protect communities.
"No country should ever have to face a disaster of this scale alone," EU Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said in a statement announcing the deployment.
"To the people of France and Spain: Europe will stand with you until the fires are out."
Why this wildfire season is significantAccording to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, the area burned across the European Union this year is already well above the long-term average, even though it remains below the record-breaking pace seen during the same period in 2025.
Scientists attribute the heightened wildfire danger to repeated heatwaves, prolonged drought and increasingly dry vegetation across the continent.
Speaking on Wednesday, Lahbib said Europe must adapt to a changing wildfire threat driven by climate change, emphasizing that prevention, including forest management, public awareness and preparedness, must complement firefighting efforts.
"Climate change is changing the scale and intensity of wildfires," she said, adding that around 90% of wildfires are caused by human activity, whether accidental or deliberate.
