Inside ‘monster' funeral parlour where owner gave ashes to wrong families and ‘left bodies to rot'
One of twisted Robert Bush's victims has told the Mirror the funeral director went quickly from the "consummate professional" to "Frankenstein".
Speaking in our brief film about Bush's crooked acts, Karen Dry said she is praying the fiend is served justice for his crimes. The mum-of-two told us she may never know if she actually has her mum and dads’ ashes.
Bush is being sentenced at Hull crown court for more than 65 offences which took place over 12 years with hundreds of victims and their grieving families impacted.
Speaking in our footage above, Ms Dry, of Cottingham, Hull, said: "He was charming. He was pleasant and very patient, he was a consummate professional. He had a certain pleasantness about him. He had a nice personality.
“But we realised he was actually a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The truth is you can’t DNA-test ashes. This man has affected hundreds of families. A small village full. There's probably more Frankensteins elsewhere - hiding in plain sight."
One lonely young woman who had lost her baby during Covid also spoke of her trauma after discovering she had been sent animal remains by the wicked 48-year-old man. Lucy Ness said Bush was pleasant and helpful on the phone, and so she initially saw no red flags.
Ms Ness was just a teenager when she suffered a devastating miscarriage as the pandemic raged. She felt nothing would come close to the pain she had to live through, but when discovered years later that her unborn child's ashes actually belonged to an animal, her had to re-lived her trauma as she suffered twice.
She said: “I was 12 weeks pregnant when I lost my baby. I had no family around me, due to Covid. I phoned up Robert and asked how I would go about getting my baby cremated. He was lovely on the phone. He ticked all the boxes, there were no red flags.
“I got the ashes back and thought no more about it until the police put a statement out. They said if you have used him, get in touch. They called me back within a week and told me he had been giving out the wrong ashes. A bit more investigation found that he didn’t give me my babies’ ashes, in fact he had given me animal remains.”
Kevin Moxon, who runs Moxon’s Funeral Directors in the city, laid bare some of the grisly discoveries after Legacy Independent Funeral Directors was raided in March 2024.
He said: "The bodies were in various states of decomposition, some had been there for weeks or months on end having reportedly had their funeral months previous."
“Some deceased were in refrigeration units, some weren’t. Some were stacked on top of each other. One man who came to us, he had worked for Legacy as a driver and pallbearer. He had actually taken out two funeral plans, one for him and one for his wife.
“The ashes he received were not his wife’s. I just can’t get my head around what he has done, but he has also done it to someone who worked as part of his team as well.”
Bush's horrrific crimes came to light when police found unidentified ashes in mouldy boxes at the premises on Hessle Road, Hull, more than two years ago.
During his arrest, Bush accused Humberside Police of treating him like the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara.
The remains of multiple people were uncovered after police were called to the site when directors of another funeral home had been asked by Bush to assist with a body recovery while he was on holiday in Arizona.
Bush has pleaded guilty to 67 offences, having admitted 30 counts of preventing a lawful burial with the other 37 charges including fraud, fraudulent trading and theft
Today, a court heard how he spent more than £42,000 on holidays while defrauding grieving families as the shamed funeral director faces sentencing for more than 60 crimes spanning 12 years.
Bush's sentencing hearing is set to take place over five days, concluding on Friday, with the judge expected to hear more than 100 victim impact statements.
Throughout the period from 2017 to 2024, Bush was defrauding customers by taking money for funeral plans he was not authorised to set up, and gave families the wrong ashes for their loved ones, the court heard.
The court was told how more than £3.3million was paid in total into both Legacy and Bush's personal accounts between 2017 and 2024. The turnover reported to Companies House and HMRC did not "reflect these values", it was said.
Around £1.7m was transferred into Bush's personal bank account from Legacy during that period.
