If the Logitech G Pro X2 Superstrike’s analogue clickers were all about fine-tuning the sensation at the very tips of your mousing fingers, the HyperX Pulsefire Saga is all about adjusting the parts nestled in the rest of your hand. To nowhere near the same extent, granted, but the Saga’s modular components – and the fact that it costs a fraction of what the X2 Superstrike does – make it appealing addition to your wired mouse options.

The secret, as it apparently is with so much of modern games hardware, is magnets. The main left and right buttons, palm rest, and both individual thumb buttons all slide out and lock in via the intuitive power of Michael Faraday’s metal magic, making the swapping process a doddle while still keeping the parts in place without any wobbling or rattling. You only get one premade set of alternate parts in the box, but I ended up preferring the feel of every single replacement piece, especially the more concave click buttons and the lower-riding palmrest.

Not everything about the Saga has the same charm: the 26K sensor is merely adequate, the mouse wheel is quiet yet weirdly narrow, and unlike certain previous Pulsefires (mainly the terrific Haste and Haste 2), it’s not impressively light. It still slides around tidily and discreetly, though – the braided cable helps – and by mixing and matching the bundled chassis elements, you’re only bettering your chances of a comfortable grip. For £30, that’s no bad deal at all.
