BUDAPEST, July 29. /TASS/. Electricity generation at one reactor unit of Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant has been suspended due to the Danube River reaching a record low water level, Reuters reported.

According to the agency, the unit was shut down at 3:00 p.m. Moscow time (12 p.m. GMT). According to newspaper Magyar Nemzet, the low water level was caused by prolonged drought and extreme heat. Water from the Danube is used to cool the power plant, the report noted.

Energy Minister Istvan Kapitany previously said that Hungary's power supply system remains reliable, but decisions had been made to reduce electricity generation at reactor units 1 and 3 of the nuclear plant.

Earlier, several European media outlets reported that water levels had fallen along the entire course of the Danube. Bratislava recorded the river's lowest water level in the past 30 years, while similar conditions have been observed in Serbia and Romania.
