ROME, July 29. /TASS/. A 60% majority of Italians oppose Western weapons supplies to Kiev, so a draft resolution calling for an end to arms deliveries, submitted to the lower house by the National Future (Futuro Nazionale) party, reflects public opinion, Luciano Sandona, a party member and former advisor to the Veneto regional council, told TASS.

"We are adamant that supporting weapons supplies to Ukraine was a mistake. It has ultimately backfired on Italians, as the country now lacks funding for crucial sectors such as healthcare, education and public security. It has long been clear that arms supplies only prolong the conflict. More than 60% of Italians oppose them, and the share is growing," he pointed out.

According to Sandona, by supplying weapons to Kiev, Italy is giving up its traditional role as a neutral mediator. The European Union’s sanctions on Russia have ultimately harmed Italians, he added. "We can see it at gas stations, where fuel prices have exceeded two euros a liter. Abandoning Russian energy supplies was also a mistake," the politician said. "The conflict in Ukraine has doomed Europe itself," he concluded.

On Tuesday, Italy’s lower house of parliament rejected the draft resolution submitted by the National Future party. Earlier, the opposition Five Star Movement had also introduced draft measures in the chamber urging a halt to arms deliveries to Kiev, but the proposals failed to win support. The Lega party, which is part of the ruling coalition, has likewise called for reviewing the conditions for Italy’s military assistance to Ukraine.

The National Future party was founded by Roberto Vannacci, a former Lega member who previously served as Italy’s military attache in Russia. Vannacci left Lega over disagreements regarding the Ukraine issue.

In December 2025, the Italian cabinet approved a decree extending assistance to Ukraine, including military aid, through the end of 2026. In February, Italy’s upper house of parliament gave final approval to the extension of military supplies to Kiev despite internal divisions and criticism from some members of the ruling majority.

Moscow has repeatedly stressed that Western arms deliveries to Kiev and assistance with troop training would only prolong the conflict without changing the situation on the battlefield.
