Yandex Weather has adopted a new forecasting technology called Neurometeum. It is now the first consumer-facing weather service to use a neural network that independently models global atmospheric behavior in its entirety. Neurometeum can generate a worldwide forecast within minutes — significantly faster than traditional calculation methods — while also enhancing the forecast's overall accuracy.

Previously, Yandex Weather relied on Meteum, another neural network-based system that worked by analyzing and optimizing outputs from multiple meteorological centers' models. Those models run on supercomputers and typically require several hours to compute a forecast.

With Neurometeum, Yandex Weather now delivers precipitation forecasts — the most challenging parameter in meteorology — for the next 16 hours. In the future, the new technology will also be used to make 10-day forecasts and predict temperature, wind, and other key metrics.

Until now, AI weather technologies similar to Neurometeum — including those developed by Google and Huawei — have been used almost exclusively in scientific research. Yandex is the first company to deploy such technology in a live, public weather service, making AI forecasting directly accessible to users.

In comparative testing, Neurometeum demonstrates equal or superior accuracy to Google's latest model, WeatherNext2, for precipitation forecasts over the next 12–18 hours, despite using a single neural model rather than a complex combination. Moreover, Neurometeum estimates global precipitation totals with 10 times greater accuracy than other neural forecasting solutions currently available.
