The Chicago Cubs have designated struggling starting pitcher Jameson Taillon for assignment after another tough outing.
Taillon, who will be a free agent at season’s end, has been lit up for a staggering 25 home runs in just 76 innings pitched for the Cubs this season. He has a 2-6 record and an ERA of nearly 6.00, with a Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of negative-0.9.
Those 25 home runs are tied for the second-most allowed in Major League Baseball this season, with Taillon throwing nearly 30 fewer innings than Jeffrey Springs, who has allowed 27 home runs on the year.
It’s unclear whether the Cubs will attempt to assign Taillon to the minor leagues, but after giving up five home runs in his last two starts with the Cubs, his time in the starting rotation has come to a halt.
In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs have selected the contract of pitcher Andrew Wantz from Triple-A Iowa.
Wantz has appeared in seven games, including three starts, with the Iowa Cubs this season. He has a 4.32 ERA in 25 innings of work.
The Cubs and Cardinals are set to kick off a series at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, with the game airing on Marquee Sports Network.
