A Honduras man was appeared in New Haven federal court Monday after he was arrested for returning to the United States after being deported, prosecutors said. 

NEW HAVEN — A Honduras man was arrested Monday for returning to the United States after being deported, federal prosecutors said. 

Yovani De Jesus Alvarez Murillo, 42, was charged with illegal reentry of a removed alien, according to David X. Sullivan, U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Sullivan said Alvarez Murillo was previously deported to Honduras in 2013 after he was convicted of a forgery offense in Stamford. Officials said he entered the United States in 2002 by crossing the Mexican border. 

Alvarez Murillo subsequently reentered the country, Sullivan said. He said he was later arrested in Stamford in 2021 and 2023 under the name “Geovany Alvares-Murillo” for minor offenses. 

Sullivan said Alvarez Murillo was again arrested in 2024 by Connecticut State Police for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and by Stamford police in 2025 for driving without an ignition interlock device. 

Alvarez Murillo was convicted of the offenses in May and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was released Monday and transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Sullivan said. 

Sullivan said Alvarez Murillo appeared in New Haven federal court and was ordered detained. He man faces up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.
