United States President Donald Trump has landed in the spotlight once again following his involvement earlier this month in FIFA’s unprecedented decision to overturn the red card suspension issued to United States striker Folarin Balogun. Now, with one of the country’s leading Democrats calling for an investigation, both Trump and the White House are firing back.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is seeking records from FIFA detailing its communications with Trump, members of his administration, and the Trump Organization as part of an inquiry into whether any misconduct occurred.

The White House, meanwhile, has brushed off the matter, dismissing Raskin as “a stupid person’s idea of a smart person.”

Throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Trump and the United States faced significant criticism over several aspects of the tournament.

Among the most heavily criticized issues were FIFA’s decision to allow Trump to hand the trophy to the victors following the World Cup Final, the treatment of Iranian players during the event, Africa’s top referee being refused entry into the United States, the Americanization of the tournament through commercials airing during “hydration breaks,” a Super Bowl-style halftime show in the final, the introduction of championship rings, and perhaps most controversially, Trump’s involvement in having Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension overturned.

The decision involving Balogun, in particular, sparked widespread backlash throughout the international soccer community. The growing controversy surrounding the tournament also resulted in Trump being repeatedly booed by fans during the World Cup Final. The criticism over Trump’s role became so intense that UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin ultimately chose to boycott the World Cup Final.

According to a report from The Athletic, Raskin has asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to provide “a list of anything of value (including transfer of money, gifts, prizes, awards, or public appearances) given to President Trump, members of his Administration, or their family members, or any entity associated with them, such as The Trump Organization.”

The report further states that Raskin is requesting visitor logs from FIFA’s Miami and New York City offices covering the full length of the organization’s New York City office lease. In his letter, Raskin wrote that it “serves as notice” directing FIFA to preserve all communications “between FIFA personnel and individuals affiliated with the Trump Administration or its inaugural committee — including disappearing messages exchanged on ephemeral communication platforms, such as Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, X, and Truth Social.”

While Democrats do not currently control the House, making it unlikely that Raskin can force Infantino to testify before the committee, that dynamic could change following the upcoming midterm elections.

“If the Democrats retake the House in the midterms, Raskin could take the gavel of the House Judiciary Committee, which would also then give him subpoena powers. A Democratic source familiar with the investigation warned that organizations should be aware that today’s oversight questions can rapidly become tomorrow’s formal investigations if and when subpoena powers change hands. This, the source said, should lead FIFA to engage in good faith rather than assure an adversarial posture,” the Athletic reports.

The White House addressed the investigation on Monday, minimizing the controversy while highlighting what it described as the success of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Lightweight Jamie Raskin (is) a stupid person’s idea of a smart person,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle said to The Athletic in a statement. “No other president in history could have pulled off the historic feat that President Trump delivered for the American people and the world.

“Thanks to his bold vision and decisive leadership, the 2026 FIFA World Cup generated billions of dollars in revenue, created a massive economic boost across host cities, and delivered a safe, secure, and seamless experience for millions of fans and athletes from around the globe. It will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest and most successful sporting events in history.”

On social media, people were largely pleased that something was being done about the apparent corruption.

“Great to see @RepRaskin. One of the most important things the House can do (even in Judiciary) is to provide oversight and transparency of important issues…” one commenter wrote in a post.

“Do the D’s know something or is it a fishing expedition? And if it is a fishing expedition, is it a bad bet given the record of some people in Trump world?” someone else added.

“Infantino and Trump are both corrupt, power hungry autocrats living in a palace of self delusion, sorounded by sycophants. No wonder they are drawn to each other,” another person wrote.

“This could become a major political and sports governance story,” someone else added.

“This is phenomenal,” another person wrote of the investigation.
