Philadelphia officials and event organizers shared details about transportation, parking and accessibility for the upcoming Roots Picnic at the Belmont Plateau.
On Thursday, May 28, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Office of Special Events held a news conference to announce key details about this year’s music festival, which will be held on May 30 and May 31 and will be headlined by hip-hop legend JAŸ-Z.
“This is Philadelphia continuing to do what it does best,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “We set the stage for moments where culture, community, and music come together in a way only this city can deliver. I am especially proud of the hard work and coordination across city departments and our partners to ensure we can deliver an experience that is safe and enjoyable.”
In March, event organizers shared on social media that this year’s popular event would be moving from the Mann Center to the Belmont Plateau.
“The Belmont Plateau is where Philadelphians have gathered for generations and where music, connection, and hip-hop culture have always lived,” said Susan Slawson, Commissioner, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. “We are thrilled to have the Roots Picnic reignite a beloved summer tradition in one of the city’s most iconic gathering spaces.”
This venue switch follows last year’s rocky start, when festivalgoers faced frustratingly long lines and entry headaches on day one.

As thousands prepare to attend the festival, which is considered one of Philly’s signature summer events, officials said there are some important things people should know before they head to the Belmont Plateau this weekend.
Road closures
Gradual lane restrictions and road closures around the West Fairmount Park area began on Monday, May 18.
From May 18 until approximately 6 p.m. on June 3, Belmont Mansion Drive, between Chamounix Drive and Montgomery Drive, will remain closed.
The following streets will be closed starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 29, until approximately 5 a.m. on Monday, June 1:
Montgomery Drive, between Martin Luther King Drive and Belmont Avenue
Ramps from eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to Montgomery Drive (Exit 341)
Chamounix Drive, between Ford Road and Belmont Avenue, will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31.
Martin Luther King Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic and closed for recreational use on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31.
Additional road closures may be implemented.
Public transportation
Officials said SEPTA is a convenient option for traveling to Belmont Plateau, which is served by Bus Route 38. SEPTA will also provide additional services during and after the event to accommodate attendees.
Detour information and updates or changes to service will be published on SEPTA’s SystemStatus page and TransitView on the SEPTA app.
Parking
While parking is free, officials said space is limited and guests are encouraged to use public transit or rideshare. Parking is on grass and parking attendants are readily available to help drivers with finding open spaces.
Accessibility
The information guide on the FAQ page explains the accessibility services provided this year, including wheelchair accessibility, designated ADA Parking and ADA Entrance, Accessibility Services Hub, Accessible Viewing Areas, and Effective Communication Services.
Upgraded Roots Picnic app
Organizers also said there will be an upgraded Roots Picnic app and SMS service that will allow better communication, an added second entrance to reduce lines and speed up entry, more Roots Picnic ambassadors inside and outside the festival and improved premium experiences for general admission and VIP ticket holders.
Days after the change of venue announcement, organizers shared that JAŸ-Z would be this year’s headliner.
JAŸ-Z has close ties to Philadelphia. In the early 2000s, his record label Roc-A-Fella Records featured several Philadelphia artists, including Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk and Young Chris who were part of the hip-hop group State Property. Freeway’s 2002 single “What We Do,” which features JAŸ-Z and Beanie Sigel, is considered by many to be a Philadelphia anthem.
The rapper’s “Unplugged” album from 2001 also featured the Roots as his backing band.
JAŸ-Z also founded the Made in America Festival, a two-day music festival that was held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway every Labor Day between 2012 and 2022 except for 2020 in which it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
