For many years I procrastinated over buying a pair of Amanda Wakeley’s side-stripe trousers. Hers were the original, long before ME+EM came along. So classy, so elegant, so cool. But Wakeley trousers weren’t cheap.

So I saved and dithered. And then suddenly, in 2021, she closed her eponymous label. I was gutted. I had missed my chance. Now, equally suddenly, she’s back, and at a (slightly) more inclusive price point.

She’s collaborated with John Lewis, and it feels like a winning combination. Occasionwear is the focus of the collection, but with a practical edge: these are clothes that are truly versatile. It’s the kind of eveningwear she is famous for and it works whether you’re 37 or 73.

Wakeley’s focus on longevity and versatility fits perfectly with that brief; we want, and need, our clothes to work harder than ever and this guiding principle works superbly with her signature aesthetic, with its clean lines, fluid silhouettes and easy tailoring.

Amanda says the collection, which has launched in ten stores across the UK as well as online, was fun to make and it shows: ’It was fantastic, I had the opportunity to go through my archives, pulling out favourite pieces and prints, as well as creating brand-new ones.’

I’m just grateful her favourites are mine too and I can finally get my hands on those side-stripe trousers.

Describing the collection Amanda said: ’I felt there was a gap in the market for occasion dressing at this point in my life. I love my granny – but I don’t want to look like her when I go out.’

This kimono jacket works just as well with a simple cotton vest and jeans as it does over eveningwear

She’s exactly right and it got me thinking about the minefield that is summer occasionwear in mid-life – you want something which is glam enough for those big days like weddings but that you’re going to wear more than once.

So, if you’re looking for pieces to zhuzh up your summer wardrobe, here are my five rules...

1. Choose pieces that work day to night

A chic cover-up is key. This kimono jacket works just as well with a simple cotton vest and jeans as it does over eveningwear – and the trousers pair just as easily with a crisp white shirt. Wear together or as separates. The rich blue and navy paisley is seriously chic, and the satin camisole (also in cream) is a practical staple.

2. Find an everywhere, anywhere dress

One simple trick: add heels and you're wedding-ready

Add heels and you're wedding-ready; with flats, it works over swimwear for lunch. The cut is flattering, the belt defines the waist, and the sleeve shape is beautifully considered. A fresh, modern take on florals.

3. Invest in a statement suit

This vivid green is striking, perfect for everything from weddings to garden parties

It's a classic suit but the fluid fabric means it's relaxed and modern. This vivid green is striking, perfect for everything from weddings to garden parties. Wear together or split into separates for a more relaxed feel. The kimono belt cinches in the waist brilliantly if you're someone who wants/needs definition.

4. Own a co-ord

A co-ordinating trouser and top is a true wardrobe workhorse, worn together or separately

A co-ordinating trouser and top is a true wardrobe workhorse, worn together or styled separately, you get far more than one outfit. Throw it on and instantly look put-together. This belted jacket works on its own or worn open over, well, anything really.

5. Define your waist

Especially when wearing loose, flowing fabrics - a sash belt like this instantly adds shape

Especially when wearing loose, flowing fabrics – a sash belt like this instantly adds shape. These long-tasselled designs double as a scarf, too. And the satin side-stripe trousers? Seriously hard-working, and just as good with an oversized cashmere jumper.
